Female red porgy begin to transform into males at 221 mm fork length; however, the length at which females begin to mature in the GOM is unknown because the smallest female sampled by Nelson (1988) was 272 mm fork length and all females that he examined were mature.
Survivorship (standard error) of red porgy was estimated to be 0.42(0.001) from the headboat fishery data, 0.54(0.046) from the recreational fishery data and 0.58(0.014) from the commercial fishery data.

Porgy is a novel written by DuBose Heyward in 1925, as well as a play Dorothy Heyward helped him to write which debuted in 1927.
The novel tells the story of Porgy, a crippled street-beggar in the fl tenements of Charleston, South Carolina in the 1920s.
Porgy debuted on Broadway at the Guild Theatre (today's Virginia Theatre on October 10, 1927 and ran for 367 performances.

Porgy came at a time of upheaval for African Americans as they moved from south to north for jobs in the "Great Migration." As new northerners, they were adapting themselves and their rural culture to urban ways while endeavoring to keep pieces of their old society's structure.
Because Porgy and Bess deals with Negro Life in America it brings to the operatic form elements that have never before appeared in the opera and I have adapted my method to utilize the drama, the humor, the superstition, the religious fervor, the dancing and the irrepressible high spirits of the race.
