 Porirua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Porirua is a city in New Zealand, 20 km north of Wellington.
The name Porirua was first applied to a local government unit in 1961 when Makara County to the west of Wellington was abolished, the mostly rural western part becoming the Makara Ward of Hutt County and the rapidly growing eastern urban portion becoming the Borough of Porirua.
Notable councillors of Porirua have included Whitford Brown (first Mayor); Ken Douglas (trade unionist); Ken Gray (former All Black); Garry McCormick (media personality); Helen Smith (the first member of the Values Party to be elected to local government); and Tutu Wineera (a kaumatua of the Ngati Toa iwi).

Just 4 years later, the Government Statistician certified that the population was estimated to be over the 20,000 threshold and the borough was declared to be a city.
The Local Government Act 2002 (and for some purposes its 1974 predecessor) and other legislation such as the Resource Management Act 1991 determine whether particular matters are to be dealt with by either or both of those elected bodies.

Called with Porirua 311 to wash down the road after a car accident at the intersection of SH1 and Witford Brown Rd. 351 was not required and returned back to station.
Porirua 311 traced source of spill to a bus in the Paremata railway station carpark, and learned that spill extended north as far as the Plimmerton weigh station.

Porirua Lunatic Asylum was planned in the 1870's to relieve the congestion at Mt View Asylum in Wellington.
A wooden building at Porirua opened in 1887 and in 1891 the building of a two storey block to accomodate 500 people commenced.
With The Mental Defectives Act of 1911 The Porirua Lunatic Asylum became Porirua Mental Hospital, "lunatics" became "inmates", and "attendants" became "nurses".

The fill for the reclamation work at the southern end of Porirua Harbour was taken from the hillside just north of Mepham Place and another quarry off Champion Street, opposite Windley Street.
The road between Porirua and Paremata followed the coastline, which had 2 large shallow bays.

Schools in Porirua, north of Wellington, have got tough on vandalism - by refusing unauthorised people access to their grounds between the hours of darkness.
Last year about $200,000 worth of damage was caused at five schools in the area, prompting community groups to put up trespass notices and install security cameras.
Porirua City Council says the initiative has been a great success with schools reporting a fraction of the amount of damage normally suffered over the summer break.
