Porkkala was a so-called “white spot” on the map, and it is not until relatively recently that any information has been made public on the area while it was under Soviet occupation.
Life in Porkkala was privileged compared to the rest of the Soviet Union, and the lot of the soldiers based there was better than that of the Finns outside the perimeter, who were still labouring under the burden of war reparations.
The inhabitants of Porkkala were interested in the Finns, and the Finns were intrigued by this forbidden fruit in their midst, but the Finns were kept out and the Porkkala residents were kept in.

At this time, when the conditions of peaceful co-existence are the urgent concern of governments and public opinion, an ounce of Finnish-Soviet practice may be more illuminating than a ton of Western theory.
