Porno (book) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Porno (2002) is a novel by Irvine Welsh and is the sequel to Trainspotting.
We rejoin the central characters of Trainspotting a decade later, as their paths cross again in Leith, this time involving the pornography business, rather than heroin use.
At his pub, Sick Boy and Spud are in the course of winding each other up in front of Alison; the discussion turns to Renton ripping them off and Spud reveals that he wasn't ripped off, since he had eventually received his share in full, much to Sick Boy's displeasure.

Splendid: Departments: Bookshelf: Irvine Welsh's 'Porno'
His other books may have attempted to surpass the monster he created, but have failed for that very reason: Welsh has become so conscious of his legacy that he seems unable to find new and unique voices to add to and redefine his already well-defined literary universe.
Porno is the story of a group of people who have grown apart and now need to confront each other for one last time in order to make sense of the present and to move on -- if they're lucky.
Porno fails to live up to Trainspotting's legend, and is ultimately little more than a dear reminder of that other, far superior novel.

Porno, for what it’s worth, is a brilliant (if unintended) piece of conceptual fiction.
Then, more importantly, there’s his helming of a porno film being made after-hours with some local stag-film amateurs and his new girlfriend (a university student who moonlights as a principled yanker of cranks at a local “spa”).
Hubris is the driving force and once that’s established, it’s all a matter of waiting for “it” to happen, as Welsh sets pretty much all his characters on collision courses with one another — emotionally, sexually, conspiratorially, etc. And he does a fine job at times of keeping the reader’s interest piqued.

He's the only really decent character in the book: as Mark puts it, a "strangely vulnerable, but good-hearted man; but he's been so fucked up for so long it's like the essence of him is harder to find now, outside of the drugs...
In the lower register of "Porno" there's Frank, of course, but also a scene in which one of Leith's worst lowlifes abuses a destitute, sodden woman he picks up in a pub.
