 Gorboduc
It is only a short step to a play which illustrates neatly the importance of the morality tradition both to Shakespeare's histories and tragedies: Gorboduc, or Ferrex and Porrex, performed (as the title page informs us) before Queen Elizabeth.
The plot concerns a king, Gorboduc, who divides his kingdom between his two sons, Ferrex and Porrex; the moral of the story is clear, for what ensues is civil war.
Gorboduc was written for performance before Queen Elizabeth, and it is evident that the writers (two young noblemen, Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville) were concerned to instruct the Queen tactfully in the essential business of ensuring that she left an undisputed heir to the throne.

 Gorboduc notes
Contribution of Morality Plays: balancing of good and evil counsellors for Ferrex and Porrex, but note that the three counsellors of Gorboduc cannot be reduced to simple morality play figures--the play is more complex than that.
Gorboduc is in part an allegorical character in that he is most important for his political function; he is a symbol of the realm at least as much as he is a human being.
Elements of conscious artistry: equal time for all counsellors; Videna's complaint over the death of Ferrex is matched by Marcella's over the death of Porrex; each act has the same basic tripartite structure (dumbshow, scenes, chorus).

The acts close with a chorus composed of the ` four ancient and wise men of England,' who reflect upon the situation, and educe the moral of the action.

I do not understand this; and Shakspeare seems to have intended the meaning not to be more than snatched at:—'By my fay, I cannot reason!'
This admirable substitution of the epic for the dramatic, giving such a reality to the impassioned dramatic diction of Shakspeare's own dialogue, and authorized too, by the actual style of the tragedies before his time (Porrex and Ferrex, Titus Andronicus, andc.)—is well worthy of notice.
The fancy, that a burlesque was intended, sinks below criticism: the lines, as epic narrative, are superb.
