Fletcher was a marvellous creation - a bona-fide TV comedy icon, one of an elite number that also includes Alf Garnett, the Steptoes, Basil Fawlty and Victor Meldrew - and Ronnie Barker, who by the mid-1970s was at the acme of his profession, was sensationally good in the role.
Porridge was so successful that people wondered why prison hadn't been used before as a situation for comedy, the general explanation being that jail was such a sensitive setting that only the finest-judged writing and performances could make it acceptable.
But, actually, Porridge did have antecedents: an earlier ITV show, Her Majesty's Pleasure, and the 1960 feature film comedy Two Way Stretch (director Robert Day) which featured Peter Sellers as a cockney character akin to Fletcher, Bernard Cribbins as a Godber type and Lionel Jeffries as an officious warden, much like MacKay.
