Porrima is somewhat prominent these days because it appears to be leading Jupiter across the sky.
Porrima (Gamma Virginis) is a double star though it may be difficult to resolve them because they are getting close together from our viewpoint.
So Porrima is a great location to start viewing.

But if the atmosphere is steady and your telescope has good optics, don’t be afraid to push it for objects like bright double stars.
By the year 2015 or so, Porrima will again be one of the best double stars in the whole sky, still close but able to be split by most scopes.

I could not be certain of anything at either 150X (8mm)or 200X(12mm + barlow), so I barlowed the 8mm, but the seeing would not support the 300X for anything but very brief moments - not long enough to examine the star carefully.
At 154X you could begin to note that it was a double with the view changing from a single star to a figure 8 which got my hopes up.
Porrima was about as high in the sky at my latitude as it was going to get.

A little bit of wind occurred throughout this observing session but it had near zero effect on the images I was seeing through the scope.
At ~1" of arc separation, I knew my "success" would be limited due to the 3"ers resolution limit but having a double with such equal components(in magnitude) I figured if I could see any evidence of duplicity, it would reaffirm my belief that this scopes optics are top notch.

There is one glowing exception, at least for this "lifetime", and that is Gamma Virginis, known affectionately by the name Porrima.
It was about 170 years ago that it's unusual orbit was first detected and raised some excitement.
2005 will see the two stars of Porrima return to the same region they inhabited in 1834 and best estimates put the time of this "go around" in late May. The separation will then be around.3 arcseconds, well beyond the ability of any of my telescopes to slpit it.

Not only does Beta not really "own" its own proper name, it does not even fulfill the expectation of its "beta-hood" to be the second brightest star.
At the bright end of fourth magnitude (3.61), it ranks fifth in the constellation behind Spica (Alpha), Porrima (Gamma, a double star), Vindemiatrix (Epsilon), Delta, even Zeta Vir.
Zavijava is also not terribly radiant; its modest apparent brightness (enough to be a prominent part of its constellation and the "awwa") owes itself to closeness, the star lying only 36 light years away.
