Porro was involved in a large project, beginning in 1820, the triangulation of the Piedmont and Lombardy-Venetia area, with the director of Brera observatory Francesco Carlini.
Cosmos, 1853, pp222-224.) Both the Porro I and Porro II systems were included in Porro's patent of 1854, in France and England, with two sections to the patent: 1, redirection and reversal by prisms, showing two Porro erecting systems for telescopes; and a sighting device (Visiervorrichtung) with a proposal for a rangefinder.
The third, larger prism of the Porro II design was placed a distance down the handle, and focusing was accomplished by moving this prism by rotating a small disc with the thumb.

Porro prism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Double Porro prism systems are used in small optical telescopes to re-orient an inverted image (an arrangement is known as a image erection system), and especially in many binoculars where they both erect the image and provide a longer, folded distance between the objective lenses and the eyepieces.
A single Porro prism is a type of roof prism, though it is not used in this way in binoculars.
A variation on the double Porro prism is the Porro-Abbe prism.

 Binocular Prisms: Roof or Porro?
Porro prism binoculars have the classic “dog leg” shape with the eyepiece offset to the one side with respect to the objective or front lens.
Prisms are expensive, but without them a binocular would always produce upside-down, reversed images, challenging even the most skilled birder.
Thus we have a trade-off: the slight optical superiority of the typical Porro prism versus the comfort factor of the standard roof prism.

 Binocular stereo-microscope - Patent 4436384
The ray which enters the Porro prism through the surface 11a is reflected by the surfaces 11b, 12a, 12b and 13b, and goes out through the surface 13a.
In the present invention, the prism 12 is inclined from the plane vertical to the optical axis O.sub.1 of the objective by an angle.omega..sub.1 as shown in FIG.
The ray reflected by the surface 12b becomes incident on the surface 13b of the prism 13 in the state that the ray is inclined in respect to the plane vertical to the surface 13b and, then, the ray is reflected by the surface 13b.

The porro prism was the first of these two designs and consists of two mirrors mounted separately.
Most bird watchers are inclined to stick with the slim roof prism design although there are those with big hands that claim that the larger porro prisms are more comfortable for them (I have large hands and do not find this so).
Modern roof prism binoculars tend to have two separate prisms that are cemented together, rather than two offset prisms of the porro prism design.

Porro-Abbe prism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Porro-Abbe prism (sometimes called a Abbe-Porro prism), named for Ignazio Porro and Ernst Abbe, is a type of reflection prism used in some optical instruments to alter the orientation of an image.
Light enters one flat face, is internally reflected four times from the sloping faces of the prism, and exits the second flat face offset from, but in the same direction as the entrance beam.
The Porro-Abbe prism should not be confused with the dispersive Abbe prism or the non-dispersive Abbe-Koenig prism.

Roof prism, Porro prism (and reversed Porro prism) binoculars each use image-erecting prisms to provide correctly oriented images.
You will recognize the Porro prism as a "traditional" binocular design with offset prisms while the roof prism binocular has parallel barrels and a more streamlined appearance.
Porro Prism models will deliver the best optics for the dollar, but lack the durability and compact styling of roof prism models.

 Pentax Imaging - Binocular FAQ
Historically, porro prisms were the first types of binoculars, but they had some design limitations.
Roof prisms were developed because the new design made it possible to build smaller and lighter binoculars.
Roof prism binoculars are manufactured to closer optical and mechanical tolerances making them more rugged than comparable quality porro prism binoculars.

Roof Prism Binoculars vs. Porro Prism Binoculars -- Report of a test
And we know Porro prism designs are easier and less expensive to manufacture, because the tolerances are not so demanding.
We put a top roof prism binocular, the Nikon 10x42 Venturer LX, side by side with the Nikon 10x42 Superior E, which is the top roof prism design by the same manufacturer.
Although we expected the Porros to be brighter, no one could see any difference in brightness or contrast between the two.

Birding Binoculars 2: Roof Prisms vs. Porros Prisms
Porro prism binoculars were standard until the 1960's, when the Zeiss and Leitz companies introduced roof prism binoculars, whose objective lenses were straight in line with the eyepieces.
Porro prism design has a jog in the light path through each barrel.
The Porro prism design was simpler and more light efficient, and its images showed better contrast.

As a specialist for the miniaturization of optical equipment MINOX has been able to develop compact Porro binoculars minimizing these familiar weak points and maximizing the strong ones.
With this almost three-dimensional imaging it is a lot easier to exactly estimate the position and distance of the objects in the field of view, something hunters or those practicing water sports will rate very highly.
