The Porsche 356 was a highly competitive racing car in the under 2 litre GT class in the 1950s and early 1960s.
By 1963 Porsche realised the 356 was no longer sufficiently competitive and they decided to design a purpose built car to compete in the under 2 litre class.
Porsche cancelled it's moderately successful Formula 1 program to free up resources for the new 904 program and the car was homologated by April 1964.

Often referred to as the first of the "modern" Porsches, the 904, developed in 1963 and first raced in 1964, featured another "first" for Zuffenhausen, a full fiberglass bodied coupe, bonded to a steel channel frame.
It was the first Porsche with a plastic body and 100 examples had to be built in order to qualify for the GT class.

In a recent copy of Octane magazine I saw a small picture of a Porsche 904 Sypder, it was part of an article about the Targa Florio, the car was a test car, I have no idea if it was ever raced in the Targa Florio or elsewhere.
Externally the body work of some of the later cars is similar to the 904, particularly at the front, and in many ways it does look like a 904 with the roof cut off.
The Porsche 904 Bergspyder was referred to as the "Kanguruh".

Other body mods will include a front air dam/splitter which I think the 904 is in dire need of, a carbon rear wing in conjunction with the factory add on rear lip, and I might even add the roof scoop/intake like the GT1 has, we'll have to wait and see.
The beauty of the 904 is that it uses a standard 911 engine and gearbox combination, turned around to run midengine.

At least Faller knew a 904 when they saw one, and called it out correctly in all of their literature, catalogs and labels, no doubt having a fine laugh at the silly Americans not being able to get that one right.
Looking at period photos in my Porsche books, it seems that Faller may have modeled the “street” version of the 904 (it was a GT car, after all), whereas the Aurora more closely matches the cars in racing trim (numbers on the doors are a dead give-away!).
