Porsche 908 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 908 is not to be confused with another sportscar of the same name that will race in 2007, the Peugeot 908.
For the first time, these Porsche 908 LH Long Tails were the fastest in qualifying and the early stages of the race, but it showed that Porsche had not taken advantage of the additional time to improve the 908.
Porsche decided to discontinue the 20 year old history of factory racing, sold the 908/03 cars to customers and focused on the development of the Porsche 911 and turbochargers, to return in 1976 with the Porsche 936.

Porsche racing history by Bill Oursler
Of all of the historic racing Porsches, without doubt the best remembered, and the most important was the Porsche 917 which debuted in 1969 as a 4 5-liter, 550 horsepower, twelve-cylinder version of the 908.
The reasoning behind the decision was not complicated, since Porsche already was building twice that many competition cars a year to meet the internal decree that new racers would be used by the factory for every event.
Unhappily, while the 908 was fairly stable, the 917 was not, especially approaching the 220 plus mile-an-hour speeds of which it was capable.
