But in exchange for the collaboration and the development of the car, Porsche was granted the rights to introduce its own version of the car, which would be sold with a six-cylinder motor producing 110HP at 5800rpm, and an engine derived from the 911T.
Production of the 914 was introduced in 1969; the cars were assembled by Karmann, a long standing partner company of Porsche A.G. Cars destined for the VW engine would remain at Karmann, but cars which were destined to become Porsches were shipped back to Zuffenhausen for final assembly.
The 914 2.0 litre engine of the 911T was replaced with a 2.4 litre of the 911S, increasing horsepower from 110HP to 190HP at 6500rpm.

 The Porsche 914
The Porsche 914, introduced in September 1969, was a sporty, mid-engined two-seater with a targa top and a 4 cylinder boxer engine.
The idea for the 914 originated in the mid-sixties, when the presidents of VW and Porsche collaborated on an idea to produce a new sports car for each of their companies.
Porsche went with the 2.0 liter motor as opposed to the new 2.2 found throughout the 911 range in order to maintain a distinction between the "cheaper" 914 model line and the upscale 911s.

 914
The Porsche 914 was an automobile built collaboratively by Volkswagen and Porsche from 1969 through 1976.
However, Porsche decided during development that having VW and Porsche models sharing the same body would be risky for business in the U.S. market, and convinced VW to allow them to sell both versions as Porsches in North America.
Porsche handled export to the U.S., where both versions were badged and sold as Porsches.

Porsche didn't put its crest on the 914 hood in America, although its name was spelled out in block letters on the engine cover.
The 914 was the replacement for the popular, entry-level 912, which was a 911 with a Porsche four-cylinder engine from the beloved 1950-65 Porsche 356.
Porsche dealers were calling for a less costly car because 911 and 912 prices had gone well beyond prices for the popular 356, dropped when the 911 arrived in 1965.

Porsche's 911 was a success but the demise of the older 356 had left a gap at the bottom of its range that the 912, a budget version of the 911 fitted with a four cylinder engine, could not fill.
The 914 was given crisp, modern styling by Heinrich Klein, although it is fair to say that its design has not aged as well as that of the 911.
In the end, it was the US market that saved the 914, accounting for a large share of the 120,000 sold, a performance that may reflect the policy of advertising the car there as a Porsche, avoiding the confusing branding used in Europe.

Porsche 914 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slow sales and rising costs prompted Porsche to discontinue the 914/6 variant in 1972 after producing 3,351 of them; its place in the lineup was filled by a variant powered by a new 91 HP 2.0 L, fuel-injected version of Volkswagen's Type 4 engine in 1973.
The 914 was Motor Trend's [1] Import Car of the Year for 1970 and a Porsche 914/6, piloted by Frenchmen Claude Ballot-Lena and Guy Chasseuil, won the GTS class at Le Mans in 1970 and finished sixth overall.
Porsche obviously had a "waste not, want not" attitude to their prototypes that was also evident with the 914/8's (see below).

Porsche’s 914 seemed to bypass most of these problems but it did not sell well none the less because of links to Volkswagen and the claims that it wasn’t a real Porsche, and we’ve all heard that before.
Mostly however was the fact that it was not the cheap Porsche it was meant to be.

Porsche's all-out racing machines were always mid-engined, dating back to the 550 Spyder of the 1950s.

The book goes into great depth into why the 914 "failed", although the author does state that, at over 100K unit sales, the 914 was far from a failure.
The author could have gone into a more detailed history surrounding the car's design, which is the core appeal of the 914 (e.g., there is no in depth account of the third-party company contracted to design the car).
In addition, while the book goes on to describe the 914's replacements at Porsche, it does not go into depth about how the design concepts embodied in the 914 were adapted and used in other vehicles that followed (e.g., Toyota's MR2, GM's Fiero, Porsche's Boxster, even Subaru, which still use flat fours).
