The 959 was not street legal in the United States prior to 1999 when the "Show and Display" law was finally passed, although an unknown number were imported via the "grey market" during the late 1980s as show pieces.

In the 80's Porsche had made profit, much due to the 924/944 series, so they felt that they could spend a little money, over $100 million US dollars to be more precise, in the project of the develompment of the 959.
Porsche belived that they could use the things in future production cars, or that their engineers would be state-of-the-art, but afterwards we know that so far only the 4WD system was used in a simpified form of the 1989 Carrera 4.
Porsches PSK 4-wheel drive system is the most advanced and also expensive 4WD system that had ever been on a road car.

Porsche’s 959 was conceptualised as the ultimate road-going evolution of the long-running 911.
Accordingly, the 959 was never able to contest any major championships and served almost purely as a flagship for Porsche's wealthiest customers.
Undoubtedly the greatest similarity between the 911 and 959 were the cockpits, Porsche lifting the interior fixtures and fittings almost directly from the 911.

The essence of the extraordinary 959 was just that: every conceivable example of the latest technology was applied to it and the result was that, for some time, it was undeniably the undisputed top supercar.

By the late 1950s it was obvious to Porsche that the 356, which had started as basically a heavily modified Volkswagen Beetle in 1948, was small and not particularly powerful in comparison to other sports cars at its lofty price level.
Porsche threw some spark curve and timing changes into the regular 911 engine, bumped the compression ratio up from 9.0 to 1 to 9.8 to 1 and the result was an output jump to 180 horsepower in the 911S.
The 959 featured wildly soft-edged bodywork, electronically controlled all-wheel drive fed by a six-speed transmission and a radical twin-turbocharged, 2.85-liter flat six with liquid-cooled DOHC cylinder heads, four valves per cylinder and every other technology imaginable to mid-'80s man. Porsche sold only 200 of the 450-horsepower, 197-mph 959s at somewhere north of $240,000 apiece.

MPH Magazine - Greatest Cars Ever: Porsche 959   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
In the early '80s, Porsche was looking to "rip it up" (it sounds much better in German) in the FIA's new production-based Group B class.
Quick change of plans: Because Porsche figured that rallying wouldn't benefit its road cars, the 959 magically became its rolling technology lab, with allwheel drive, sequential twin turbos, and more expensive materials and finishes than Diddy's sock-garter closet.
(Still, Porsche did run the 959 in special rallies like Paris-Dakar.) Partially because Group B rules stipulated that 200 road cars be built, Porsche based the 959 on the 911 rather than a new midengined design that was sure to spook the shit out of its customers.
