Porsche 959 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Porsche 959 is a sports car manufactured by Porsche AG from 1986 to 1989, first as a Group B rally car and later as a road going vehicle designed to satisfy FIA homologation regulations requring that a minimum number of street legal units be built.
In an attempt to create a rugged, lightweight shell, Porsche adopted an aluminium and Kevlar composite for body use along with a Nomex floor as opposed to the traditional steel that was normally used on their production cars.
Porsche also developed the car's aerodynamics which were designed to increase stability, as was the automatic ride height adjustment that became available on the street car (961 race cars had fixed suspensions).

Porsche 961 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Porsche 961 was a racing car, based on a modified Porsche 959 developed for Group B category to be run alongside Group C in WEC (World Endurance Championship) races, which was a replacement for Group 4.
After the FIA cancelled Group B for circuit cars at the end of 1985, due to lack of interest from entries, a 959 was redeveloped into the 961 to race also in the IMSA GTX championship, which made its debut at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1986.
The only other race beside Le Mans it competed in was the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1987.

 Sportscar Racing - Porsche
By 1980, their Porsche 935 was king of the GTs in Group 5 (especially the short lived 'Moby Dick' space frame 935 briefly run by the factory) and the 936 was dominating the Group 6 (open sports racers) category.
Porsche looked set to continue their domination of sportscar racing into the 80s, when they launched the 956 in 1982.
Perhaps more painful for Porsche, was the fact that a TWR designed open top prototype, dropped by the factory as a WSC car for the IMSA series in the US (after, ironically, draconian limitations on turbo engines), beat their GT1s at Le Mans, just as it had done the previous year.

The True Story of Porsche 959
Porsche had every reason to win: more money than most rivals, most expensive car in the field, most powerful and 4-wheel drive.
Therefore, Porsche cleverly used this event for advertising purpose, and simultaneously wanted to test the reliability of 959 in the worst conditions.
In 1984, Porsche entered several 911 Carrera 4x4, which were development cars for 959's 4WD system, although without the variable torque split function.

As you know, Porsche always has a racecar for their street cars (or is it the other way around ;) The Porsche 961 is the racing counterpart of the 959, and raced in the mid eighties.
Porsche was bound to win with one of those cars, so they figured why not throw a 4 wheel drive car in to see how it would do.
Mods from the 959 street car included a bigger, moveable rear stabilizer bar; the radiator was enlarged, the engine was pumped to 640Hp, and the wheels were changed.

I still wonder why people thing RUF is a fake ripoff of porsche that PD made for the games, when in fact they are real, and considered a car manufacturer because of the uber extensive modifications they do to the chassis, and everything else of the car.
And it probally becasue the licences are held by other developers and it would cost to much time and money just for some lambos, porsches, and ferrari's when they arnt as fast as people think.
Even the parts they get from Porsche are heavily modified before their used.

I know that a Porsche Boxter is not a "real" Porsche according to Porsche people, but I like it.  I am also not going to buy a 911 - too much money; I would freak if anyone touched it.  I am leaning pretty strongly towards getting one.
People are generally snobby about Boxters.  Personally I don't know the technical/price details in it, but the design isn't as nice as the 911s.  The only Porsche I would consider is the Cayenne, despite all its bad rep, except it's weird that it is the same design as the much cheaper VW Touareg.
If you want a Porsche, than I suppose the Boxster is the way to go but I am not sure it fits as an everyday driver, depending on where you live.  But for about $50K or less there are better cars from a performance perspective.  I would take the 350Z convertible over the Boxster, personally.
