Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking had just recently announced it in an interview with the German motoring magazine Auto, Motor and Sport, and here is the prove: Porsche’s new four-door coupé – dubbed Panamera – has begun its testing marathon this week, and we have the first pictures that show the real car in full action.
Though the Panamera takes over design elements from the 911 range, there will be significant differences, too: While the first has always kept its rear-mounted boxer engine, the newcomer will do with a choice of three front-mounted motors, though set back to the centre of the car as much as possible.
The target for the Panamera is to be a true sportscar while at the same time it shall be a family-car for every-day with four full seats, easy access to the rear and a luggage compartment of around 450 litres.

 CARkeys - Porsche Panamera
This is presumably why the Panamera is being described as the company's "fourth model series" after the 911, Boxster and Cayenne - the recently-announced Cayman S is built on Boxster underpinnings and doesn't count as a series in its own right.
As both the design sketch (pictured above) and Porsche's description of the car clearly show, the Panamera is a sports model, and therefore much more closely aligned with the 911 and Boxster than the Cayenne.
But it shares one feature with the Cayenne, namely the fact that the engine is in the front, something not seen on a sporting Porsche since the design that started out as the 924 and gradually evolved into the 968.
