		Alberni and the West Coast of Vancouver Island is the traditional native territory of the Nootka or Nuu-Chah-Nulth Native Nation.
		Port Alberni was incorporated in 1912 with the arrival of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, and planned arrival of the Canadian National Railway, and the Trans-Pacific telegraph cable at Bamfield.
