Port Arthur thrived as a transhipment and grain handling port for the CNR after the railway line was opened to Winnipeg in December 1901.

Also known as "The Flying Dutchman," Nighbor played hockey in his hometown of Pembroke, Ontario as a member of the 1910-11 Pembroke Debaters in the Ottawa Valley Hockey League and the following season with the Port Arthur Bearcats of the Northern Ontario Hockey League.
However, Nighbor, who was certainly on the smallish side at just 5'6" and 160 pounds, almost didn't have the opportunity to skate with Port Arthur.
If not for his pal Harry Cameron, who refused to skate for Port Arthur unless Nighbor was signed too, the gifted forward might have missed his true calling.

A Race for Ties is the first film made by the Port Arthur Amateur Cinema Society, and it also has the distinction of being the first amateur feature-length film made in Canada.
Based on the real life experiences of Dorothea Mitchell shortly after she became the first single woman granted a homestead in Ontario, the story is about a small sawmill owner, Joe Atwood, and his race against a large timber company, headed by U. Cheetem, for a railway tie contract.
Afterwards, the film toured the surrounding country-side, used by a variety of organisations in Northwestern Ontario to raise funds for local charities.
