Port Chalmers, formerly Koputai, was named after Dr. Thomas Chalmers, of the Free Church of Scotland, has preserved many of its old stone buildings and retains its connection with its maritime past.
It was from Port Chalmers on 11 February 1882 that the first cargo of refrigerated meat left New Zealand for London onboard the vessel 'Dunedin'.
Port Chalmers is a harbour of winding waters and wooded shores.

Port of Brisbane Corporation Acting Chairman, David Harrison said Brisbane’s record trade growth, which saw container trade increase by 12% and total trade reach 25.1 million tonnes in 2003/2004, was expected to continue.
Mr Harrison said the establishment of the new freight facility was the first of several new developments planned for the port in 2005.

In the November of 1940 the Port Brisbane, the Port Hobart and the Port Wellington were all sunk by surface raiders while the Port Napier, which had been converted into a minelayer, was destroyed when it blew up without, fortunately, any loss of life.
The Port Montreal and the Port Nicholson were torpedoed in the June and the Port Hunter was similarly dispatched to the bottom in the July.
The last two Port Line war casualties were in 1943 when the Port Auckland was lost in the March followed by, the almost new replacement, the Port Victor in the April, both torpedoed by U-boats.

New Zealand's Environment Court is considering case brought by local residents seeking tighter noise controls at Port Chalmers, which is owned and operated by Port Otago.
Currently the port has to "mitigate noise" for residential neighbours exposed to more than 65 Ldn (average of 65dB(A) over a 24 hour period) but around 20 properties are regularly exposed to noise in excess of the limit.
Residents are seeking lower limits that vary depending on proximity to the port....

In Nov.1937 the official name of the company became Port Line Ltd and in 1957 the company became a fourth equal partner with Blue Star Line, New Zealand Shipping Co and Shaw Savill & Albion Lines in Crusader Shipping Ltd to trade between New Zealand, the Far East and Pacific Coast of North America.
The Port Line joined a consortium named Associated Container Transportation Ltd in 1966 and this gradually started the run down and replacement of the MANZ Line which ended in 1969.
Several other amalgamations took place in subsequent years and in 1972 the parent company Cunard, was taken over by Trafalgar House Investments Ltd. By 1978 Port Line had become an integral part of the Cunard Group and in 1982 the last two Port Line ships were transferred to the Brocklebank Line.

These ships arrived at Port Chalmers between March 1848 and January 1851.

The Maritime Union is holding a public meeting in Port Chalmers as part of its national campaign for secure jobs.
The public meeting is on Thursday 3 June at 2.30pm, at the WIC Bureau Hall, next door to the Port Otago building, in Beach Street, Port Chalmers.
He says many industrial problems in New Zealand ports are caused by permanent jobs being undermined by casual jobs, a trend the Maritime Union wanted to reverse.

This year we had very calm conditions, a period of several minutes of good flying, followed by a howling southerly that tore most of the kites out of the sky.
However, Port Chalmers kite flyers were undaunted and will be back in force next year.
