Port Colborne (2001 population 18,450) is a city on Lake Erie, at the southern end of the Welland Canal, in the Niagara Region of southern Ontario, Canada near Niagara Falls.
The city is named after Sir John Colborne, a British war hero and the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada at the time of the opening of the First Welland Canal.
The city grew up around the canal, and is home to one of the world's longest canal locks at 1,380 ft (420 m).

Toronto, Ontario - The Ontario Court of Appeal has agreed to allow the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, the Canadian Environmental Law Association, and Friends of the Earth represented by Sierra Legal Defence Fund to intervene on the issue of costs in what many view as the leading proposed environmental class action in Canada.
In 2001, Port Colborne resident Wilfred Pearson launched a $750 million claim against Inco, the Ontario government and others for alleged community-wide pollution caused by the nickel mining and refining company.
To date, two levels of Ontario courts have held that while individual actions can still be brought against Inco, the claims are not suitable to proceed as a class action.

 Inco Can Be Sued by Ontario Residents, Court Rules
Inco Ltd., the world's second-biggest nickel producer, can be sued in one lawsuit by residents of Port Colborne, Ontario, who say pollution from an Inco plant devalued their properties, an appeals court ruled.
The Ontario Court of Appeals today overturned two lower court rulings because it said the plaintiffs narrowed their claim to devaluation of property from a broader claim that included damages for alleged adverse health effects resulting from the pollution.
Inco operated a refinery in Port Colborne, 145 kilometers (90 miles) south of Toronto on the shore of Lake Erie, from 1918 to 1984.

This Cenotaph was constructed in memory of the men who gave their lives in World War I and World War II, from Port Colborne.
In 1952, a parade of Canadian Corps Unit 43 and the Canadian Legion Branch 56, preceded dedication ceremonies at the Cenotaph, where Major G. Smith Macdonald unveiled the new bronze plaque bearing the names of the fallen of both World Wars, replacing the old plaque which bore only the names from the first World War.
In 1952, a new plaque was installed on the Cenotaph in the northern section of Port Colborne to honour the names of those killed in the two World Wars, from the former Humberstone Village.
