Port Dalhousie has a rich heritage built on its association with the development of shipping on The Great Lakes, Agriculture, Commerce, Shipbuilding, Sports and The Park.
Port Dalhousie owes its existence and growth to the building of the First Welland Canal, begun in 1824 and completed in 1829.
The abundant growth of virgin timber at the water's edge and the proximity to the canal directly resulted in the birth and flourishment of this enterprise in Port Dalhousie and St. Catharines.

It lies between 43 11 and 440 I2 N. and 76 I2~ and 79 49 W., and is bounded on the N. by the province of Ontario and on the S. by the state of New York.
Ports on the lake are limited in capacity to vessels drawing not more than 14 ft. of water.
It accommodates vessels 255 ft. in length, with a draught of 14 ft. The Murray canal, opened for traffic on the 14th of April 1890, extends from Presquile bay, on the north of the lake, to the head of the bay of Quinte, and enables vessels to avoid 70 m.

Port Dalhousie was the northern terminus of the Welland Canal from 1829 to 1932.
By the turn of the century, the port was a popular destination for vacationers from Toronto, who enjoyed the beautiful parks and beaches of the area.
In 1932, the Welland Canal's northern terminus was moved to Port Weller, and the importance of Port Dalhousie diminished.

Ontario, or Upper Canada, was largely colonized by United Empire Loyalists, English people who were not interested in joining the independence movement of the United States.
In addition to British nationalists there was a liberal smattering of Irish, Scots, Dutch, German and Huguenot French who brought with them concepts and attitudes from their own native lands.
While many are, in Ontario, a lot of settlers were moving west from such places as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and this was where the inspiration came from.

Lighthouse History : In 1852, the Front Range light was constructed at Port Dalhousie.
Positioned at the end of a 1500 foot long pier, on the East side of the channel, the tapered square wood tower helps guide vessels into the Port Dalhousie Harbor.
The light was automated in 1969 and now produces a white signal from an aircraft type beacon.

Port Dalhousie, was once a little village at the mouth of the Welland Canal and the site of the Muir Dry Docks that built sailing ships carrying cargo through the canals.
What I like about Port is that you can roll from the end of one pier all the way over to the end of the other one.
Port Dalhousie is easy to find - just follow the Niagara Parkway to Lakeshore Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake and go as far as you can on Lakeshore Road, turn right when Lakeshore becomes Ontario Street and you'll go right into Port Dahousie.

Angela and I flew to Buffalo, NY and took a shuttle van to Port Dalhousie Pier Marina.
Apparently that used to be the route of the Welland Canal at an earlier date.
The dripless shaft seal on the port side shaft had split in about three places, and water was pouring in.
