Sir John Eliot - LoveToKnow 1911
SIR JOHN ELIOT (1592-1632), English statesman, son of Richard Eliot, a member of an old Devonshire family lately settled in Cornwall, was born at his father's seat at Port Eliot in Cornwall in 1592.
Eliot was immediately dismissed from his office of vice-admiral of Devon, and in 1627 he was again imprisoned for refusing to pay a forced loan, but liberated shortly before the assembling of the parliament of 1628, to which he was returned as member for Cornwall.
Eliot married Rhadagund, daughter of Richard Gedie of Trebursye in Cornwall, by whom he had five sons, from the youngest of whom Nicholas the present earl of St Germans is descended, and four daughters.

Eliot was a great orator, inspired by enthusiasm and high ideals, which he was able to communicate to his hearers by his eloquence, but he was inferior to John Pym both as a party leader and as a statesman.

Even if you wanted to run SMTP over a port other than 25, it wouldn't change the fact that the way you send mail to domain foo (in the absence of explicit agreement) is to talk to port 25 on one of the MX servers for domain foo.
For some reason there's a temptation to believe that somehow "smtp" is more meaningful than 25, that we should write our code in terms of a string constant that isn't part of the protocol we're implementing rather than in terms of a numeric constant that is carried on the wire.
Folks, This is in response to Eliot's presentation this morning, in the AppsArea and it is merely intended to solicit comment: I have always understood the construct of Well-Known Ports as being a means of standardizing an efficient rendezvous mechanism, for clients to find servers.

 ELLIOT / ELIOT / ELIOTT / ELLIOTT
ELLIOT, ELIOT, or ELLIOTT, a surname of considerable antiquity both in Scotland and England, possessed by a border clan which resided mainly in the eastern districts of the border.
The Scottish Elliots appear to have been originally settled on the river and village of Eliot or Elot, in Forfarshire, hence the word Arbirlot, a contraction of Aber-Eliot, the river entering the sea at the parish of that name.
During the reign of Robert the Third, about the year 1395, they were induced to remove, in a body, into Liddesdale, by the family of Douglas, to strengthen their interest on the borders, toward England.
