Chartered as a town on March 12, 1803, Port Gibson is Mississippi's third oldest settlement, being occupied in 1729.
Port Gibson was the site of several clashes during the American Civil War and was important during Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg Campaign.
The Battle of Port Gibson occurred on May 1st, 1863 and resulted in the deaths of over 200 Federal and Confederate soldiers.

According to legend, General Grant spared Port Gibson after defeating the Confederates saying that the town was “too beautiful to burn.” Grant's victory at the battle of Port Gibson gave the Union forces a firm footing in Mississippi and compelled the abandonment of the fortifications at Grand Gulf (May 3).
The university is located in Claiborne County, Mississippi, seven miles west of Lorman, 17 miles southwest of Port Gibson, and 45 miles south of Vicksburg on Highway 552.
Port Gibson is in the Second Congressional District that is represented in Washington by Congressman Bennie Thompson.

Because of a uniquely discriminatory Mississippi State Tax Code legislatively enacted in 1988, Claiborne County property tax revenue from the nuclear station was re-appropriated to more than 40 other Mississippi counties in Entergy’s electricity distribution area.
The peculiar tax code act was applied only to nuclear power in Mississippi, no other electrical generation facilities and their county directed revenues were impacted.
Contrary to the 2004 Claiborne County civil defense plan for Grand Gulf nuclear power station Bald Hill Road is not useable as an evacuation route, possibly cutting off prompt evacuation of residents south of the reactor and the back door for the 700 nuclear workers at Grand Gulf.

During America's Civil War, Port Gibson is best remembered as one of General Grant's first conquests after crossing the Mississippi River during the Vicksburg Campaign of 1863.
During this campaign, Port Gibson escaped the fiery fate of other Mississippi towns.
In a famous legend, Grant reportedly stated that the town was "too beautiful to burn." He left Port Gibson mostly unscathed on his northward trek to Vicksburg.

G., "had other fish to fry" and didn't learn to quilt until 1991 when she retired from her job as a high school math teacher and started going to Mississippi Cultural Crossroads — a center for the preservation of the traditional quilting traditions and a quilting hotbed in Port Gibson, Mississippi.
She says that that quilting has been a blessing for her and her self-esteem was boosted substantially by the governor's award she received for her multicolored patchwork strip quilt.
