PORT GLASGOW, a municipal and police burgh and seaport of Renfrewshire, Scotland, on the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde, 204 m.
In 1710 it became the chief custom-house port for the Clyde, until superseded by Greenock.

Port Glasgow town map - R P A Smith Street Plans
Port Glasgow is situated on the banks of the lower reaches of the River Clyde, immediately to the east of Greenock.
Port Glasgow became a burgh in 1833, but, around this time, the deepening of the Clyde up to Glasgow and the construction of new road and railway links sounded the death knell of the town as a port.
Now that Port Glasgow is no longer an independent burgh, the municipal buildings have recently been fairly sympathetically converted into a public library by the highly regarded Glasgow architects, Page and Park; the resulting 1990s look of the rear of the building is pictured immediately to the left.

Before the Clyde was deepened at Glasgow in the late eighteenth century, large trading vessels could not sail up it as far as the city, and Port Glasgow was created in the 1660s as a deep water port for the city, facilitating its trade with the New World.
The port and its accompanying village grew substantially, and in 1775 absorbed the neighbouring fishing village of Newark.
Having expanded dramatically during its boom years, the Port Glasgow of the last century found itself with an unenviable amount of cramped and inadequate housing.

Historical perspective for Port Glasgow   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The earlier seaports connected with the trade of Glasgow were situated on the Ayrshire coast, but between 1650 and 1660 the commerce of the great city of the west had so much increased that the distant harbours were found expensive and inconvenient, and the community resolved to have a harbour of their own.
In 1710 it was constituted the principal custom-house port of the Clyde, and soon afterwards the town extended its original limits so greatly that it came in contact with, and practically absorbed the village of Newark-a burgh of barony belonging to Hamilton of Wishaw.
Port-Glasgow is an independent port, having jurisdiction on the S side of the Clyde from the Greenock whalefishery buildings eastward to Blantyre near Bishopton House, and on the N side of the Clyde from the point of Ardmore eastward to the W end of Dumbuck Hill.
