Nigeria has deployed extra troops to the southeastern city of Port Harcourt to clamp down on escalating gang warfare in the country's most important oil centre, military officials said on Friday.
Port Harcourt is now awash with illegally held weapons and there are fears the city may go the way of the oil town of Warri further west of Niger Delta.
“Perhaps bearing the importance of Port Harcourt in mind the government is rushing in troops in hopes of halting further deterioration of the security situation,” Akinbo said.

Port Harcourt was founded by the British in 1912 on land originally inhabited by the Ikwerre and Ijaw people.
The initial purpose of the port was to export coal that arrived in large quantities from the mining town of Enugu to the north via the Bonny River along which the port sits.
Port Harcourt is also one of the centres for strong Pentecostal Christian growth in the region and is host to several large churches such as Royal House of Grace International Church and Abundant Life Evangel Mission headed by apostle Zilly Aggrey and apostle Eugene Ogu respectively.

The military is aiming to keep the waterways around Port Harcourt safe and open and to "stop the fighters from coming into the city," said a military official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
