FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (Reuters) -- West African peacekeepers backed by Nigerian warplanes have driven rebels from Port Loko, 55 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of the Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, a spokesman for the ECOMOG peacekeeping force said Friday.
Hundreds of rebels attacked Port Loko on Wednesday and, according to a local journalist who fled Thursday, seized part of the town while ECOMOG held another section.
Port Loko, an important district capital, had around 150,000 inhabitants before the recent upsurge in fighting.

Thanks to cooperation with the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS), Red Cross messages can now be delivered to areas outside Freetown, such as Bo, Moyamba, Makeni, Port Loko and Lungi, so that family members can stay in touch despite the interruption of normal channels of communication.
As the fighting died down in the northern provinces, rehabilitation work resumed last week on 55 wells in Bombali district and Port Loko town.
Wells are the only source of drinking water for the inhabitants of some villages, and ICRC water and sanitation engineers together with Ministry of Health staff are working against the clock to complete the project before the start of the rainy season.

As the impression that this was definitely was what the Lord wanted in my life grew, I decided to obey and enrolled in a Bible School at Port Loko.
After just one term the school was forced to close because local authorities desired that job skills be taught rather than preparation for the ministry.
Port Loko is a Muslim town and this may have influenced the decision.

The team visited programs for rape survivors, camps for the internally displaced, clinics and hospitals, and interim care centers for demobilized child soldiers in Freetown, in two towns in the provinces, Port Loko and Kenema.
Some of the young women and girls live in fear that the fathers, members of rebel groups, will come back from the bush to claim their babies.
Though PHR's prevalence information is not yet available, it has been reported that in certain areas north of Freetown such as Port Loko, Kabala and Makeni, rebels have raped most of the women and girls in the area of their control.

 Sierra Leone Elections Results: May 2004 Local Government
Sometime early next week, we will also be bringing you the results of the Postponed Elections in certain parts of Moyamba, Kono and Port Loko as well as the results of the upcoming Bye-Elections slated to replace one of the elected SLPP Kenema Councillors who passed away on Elections Day.
However, there are six pending appeals lodged by the APC against 6 of the winning SLPP candidates for Port Loko.
Additionally, there will be Bye-Elections slated for June 5th (this Saturday) in three of the Port Loko Wards; namely Kaffu Bullom Ward Four, Sanda Magbolonto Ward One and Bure Ward Three because no elections where held in these Wards on May 22nd due to ballot printing problems amongst others.
