The Port Melbourne Lighthouses have been preserved as part of the Beacon Cove housing estate that has transformed the old industrial port area.
However, the rear tower is still in operation, and now flashes a white light which is visible for 20 nautical miles, and a tri-colour light which is visible for 15 nautical miles, which shows red to mark the west of the channel, green to mark the east, and white to mark the centre.
Both the front and rear Port Melbourne lights are accessible via parkland at the rear of the housing estate, or via the public access at the foreshore.

Her passage inward to Port Phillip resulted in the stranding of the steamship Wangara which was attempting to avoid the vessel in the main channel.
Inward bound to Melbourne with a cargo of coal, parted her cables whilst at anchor in the West Channel, off Indented Head, Port Phillip, while waiting for a pilot, drove aground, wrecked, close to the wreck of the Clarence and became a total loss, 6 August 1852.
While traversing Port Phillip from Queencliff to Portsea, she was struck amidships by the outward bound MV Duntroon, and sank within a minute with the loss of all hands - three officers and twenty-one sailors, 20 November 1940.
