On May 21, in response to the settlers at Port Nicholson (later Wellington) who were laying out a new town under the flag of the independent New Zealand, he asserted British sovereignty over the whole of New Zealand, despite the incompleteness of the Treaty signing effort.
He sent Willoughby Shortland and some soldiers to Port Nicholson on May 25, where the council of the settlers was disbanded.
His suggestion to make Port Nicholson the capital was rejected in favour of Hobson's plan for a new town on Waitemata Harbour, to be named Auckland after Lord Auckland.

Having been in Port Nicholson before the arrival of the settlers, I have put together the following notes on the physical aspect of the place, and the condition of the native inhabitants at that time.
At Port Nicholson heads, the tide was not so strong as to draw in the "fish," as they were termed, and as a consequence the place was unfrequented, and remained with its people in a more primitive condition than any of the surrounding harbours.
The land-slips on the Orongo range, to the eastward of Port Nicholson, were not existing in 1839 ; they are said, and I believe correctly, to have been caused by the great earthquake of 1848.

On the 13th August, 1840, the barque London chartered by the New Zealand Company,sailed from the Port of London bound for Port Nicholson with 228 emigrants aboard.
Port Nicholson seemed to be the logical place for the Governor to reside as the population of white Europeans numbered some 4,000 immigrants and settlers at that time.
There was only a bridle path over the Port Hills and soon the passengers, loaded with their personal belongings, began the trek to the settlement and the end of their long journey.

MEREDITH NICHOLSON (1866-1947) was a prolific and popular author in his lifetime, but is little known today outside his native state of Indiana, which he used as setting for a number of his works (notably The House of a Thousand Candles, the best-seller among his many novels).
His politics were progressive, and his idealistic view of American democracy is displayed in The Port of Missing Men (1907), in which the growing conflict between the Old World of decaying European royalty and aristocracy and New World democratic values is interwoven with a plot of political intrigue.
Nicholson was an excellent prose stylist with an ear for energetic and realistic dialogue and a narrative ability far above the average of the popular novelists of his day (or ours).

In Nov.1937 the official name of the company became Port Line Ltd and in 1957 the company became a fourth equal partner with Blue Star Line, New Zealand Shipping Co and Shaw Savill & Albion Lines in Crusader Shipping Ltd to trade between New Zealand, the Far East and Pacific Coast of North America.
The Port Line joined a consortium named Associated Container Transportation Ltd in 1966 and this gradually started the run down and replacement of the MANZ Line which ended in 1969.
Several other amalgamations took place in subsequent years and in 1972 the parent company Cunard, was taken over by Trafalgar House Investments Ltd. By 1978 Port Line had become an integral part of the Cunard Group and in 1982 the last two Port Line ships were transferred to the Brocklebank Line.
