		The immediate cause of the division of Versailles Township was the growth of the two villages of Port Perry and Coultersville, at the opposite extremes of its territory, and in September 1869 by decree of Court, the Townships of North and South Versailles were erected out of Versailles Township.
		Port Perry is situated at the mouth of Turtle Creek in North Versailles Township on the Monongahela River.
		Port Perry does not have a saloon within its border at the present time, nor has it had one for the past two years, although it is stated that in the early days, there were quite a few saloons in and about Port Perry, and the whiskey drunk was full proof of their existence.

		The Perry County Port Authority d/b/a the Hoosier Southern Railroad (HOS) was created by a resolution of the Perry County, Indiana, Board of Commissioners in 1991 to purchase Norfolk Southern's (NS) 19.8 miles rail line from Santa Claus to Cannelton, Indiana.
		The Port Authority is governed by a Board of Directors who are appointed to the position by the Perry County Commissioners to four-year terms.
		With the growth of the Port Authority, the Directors appointed a Chief Executive Officer in 1999 who is responsible for the management of the combined entities of the railroad and the port.

		Coles commended them on the flexibility of their port-rail capabilities, but English reminded them, "because you're a riverport, everything doesn't have to move by river; it can be truck or rail." He said the study will show the port officials how to capitalize on all of their opportunities.
		Coles said the riverport's existence is a benefit to this community - because it helps entice jobs to the area - that isn't reflected in the port authority's bottom line.
		A local committee is working to launch its own planning effort for the development of a riverfront recreation path, and may be able to use abandoned rail line between Tell City and Cannelton for a portion of it.

	USDA Rural Development--Success Stories
		Economic development efforts in Perry County received a boost with the announcement of a special financing partnership between the Perry County Port Authority, Southern Indiana Rural Electric Cooperative (SIREC), and USDA Rural Development.
		SIREC was awarded a $450,000 interest free USDA Rural Economic Development Loan which was in turn loaned by SIREC to the Perry County Port Authority for reconstruction of the Hoosier Southern Railroad main line and certain facilities at the Port of Tell City.
		The improved rail line and port facilities will also aid in reduction of highway traffic by the transfer of products now shipped by truck to both rail and barge thus increasing highway safety and reducing pollution.
