Some fifteen of the leading colonists of Tasmania (formerly Van Diemens Land) formed a company in early 1835 with a view to purchasing a large tract of land from the aborigines on the unsettled south coast of Australia, helping found Melbourne and the future State of Victoria in the process.
Batman’s treaty with the aborigines of Port Phillip is the only example of any settlers (official or unofficial) giving recognition to the rights of the aborigines to the land.
The claims of the Port Phillip Association were only recognised to the extent of £7,000, allowed as a reduction on the purchase price of land bought by the association at public auction.

Her passage inward to Port Phillip resulted in the stranding of the steamship Wangara which was attempting to avoid the vessel in the main channel.

 History of Port Phillip
The coasts of the Port Phillip district were examined between 1798 and 1802, firstly by George Bass, 1798 then by James Grant, 1801 in the Lady Nelson then by John Murray, 1802 in the Lady Nelson and then by George Bass and Matthew Flinders, 1802 in the Investigator.
On board were 19 settlers, 26 settlers' wives and children, 50 marines, civil officers, 299 male convicts and 29 convicts' wives and children to found a settlement on Port Phillip, with the intention of forestalling any attempt by the French to occupy the area.
The first Mass was celebrated on the site in February 1858 in a former partially completed church, some of which was incorporated into the south aisle of the present building; by 1868, the completed nave of the Cathedral first served the needs of the community for regular worship and prayer.
