In the early hours of a Sunday morning, 25 August 1974, residents of the quiet community of Port Robinson, Ontario, were awakened to the sounds of their 43-year old lift bridge collapsing and slipping into the Welland Canal.
Renamed Port Robinson after John Beverley Robinson, Chief Justice of Upper Canada, the village with its many thriving businesses, notably the shipyards and dry docks, became the pivotal core of the peninsula.

As the Feeder route had only 4-foot draft and as sailing vessels using the Welland River route had to be towed up the Niagara against strong currents by 8 to 14 yoke of oxen, it soon became evident an extension of the Canal south from Port Robinson to Lake Erie was essential.
At Port Robinson, the summit level of the canal was connected to the Welland River by two locks locking down to the river.

The first canal, opened in 1829, was 8 feet deep and connected Port Dalhousie (3 miles west of the present canal's northern outlet) with Port Robinson on Chippawa Creek, which gave access to the Niagara River.
In 1833 the canal was extended southward to Port Colborne, and between 1871 and 1887 it was enlarged.
It lies about 45 miles (70 km) southwest of Port Colborne, which is the Lake Erie terminus of the Welland Canal.

With the construction of the fourth Wellend Canal, portions of the route south of Welland Junction and south of Port Robinson (Cambridge) were abandoned in 1971.
Location: The line is located at the east end of the Niagara Peninsula parallel to the Niagara River, connecting Port Colborne on the shores of Lake Erie with Port Dalhousie to the north on Lake Ontario.

Dying sheepshead collected 2 weeks ago by the US Department of Environmental Conservation from the shore of Lake Erie near Buffalo were found to have botulism and to have fed on gobies.
The bacterium is generally dormant in a live fish, and forms a toxin once the fish is dead as part of the process of decomposition.
