Mr Hoskins and his team, who are part of the port's Marine Services division, were approached by Environment Waikato in November 1997 to bid for a contract to map the bed of the lower Waikato River between Ngaruawahia and Port Waikato.
For the port the hydrographers annually chart the sea bed in the Waitemata and Manukau, check and measure the depths of the berths and check the channels within pilotage limits.
Environment Waikato is currently negotiating with Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner Ltd and Mr Hoskins to extend the hydrographic surveying of the Waikato River.

When I arrived at BP Papakura this morning, only Jim and Chin were there to welcome me. I understood why, as I was wondering if I should cancel the ride or not until the last minute, due to the weather.
But a nice blue sky appeared at Papakura and we headed first for Port Waikato, as Chin suggested.
We had a shower before we got to the only cafe at Port Waikato.

Armed police are combing an area of mixed forest and farmland around Port Waikato today for Kim Bruce Smith, who is wanted for questioning over the death of Tribesman gang member Dwayne Andre Wilson, shot dead at Waingaro, between Ngaruawahia and Raglan, on June 7.
Waikato police communications manager Kris McGehan said Smith, a member of the Outcasts gang, had come close to being caught several times.
