LOS ANGELES - The Port of Los Angeles this week opened the world's first green container terminal as part of a $50-million settlement of a lawsuit over air pollution that has plagued communities near the port.
Ships that use the port's electric power system instead of idling their diesel engines for days at dockside while cargo is unloaded will cut nitrogen oxide emissions by an amount equivalent to 69,000 diesel truck miles, port officials said.
Los Angeles city officials agreed to try the AMP system to settle a 2001 lawsuit brought by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Clean Air Coalition on behalf of residents of San Pedro, whose rates of respiratory illnesses and cancer are among the region's highest.

Port of Los Angeles Interim Director Bruce Seaton told Logistics Today the port would raise its tariff 5% beginning July 1st.
That said, the port saw a drop of 23% in loaded, in-bound containers in March 2005, down from 334,547 TEUs to 255,389 TEUs.
While the board at the Port of Los Angeles considered the increase, Seaton said, his counterpart at the Port of Long Beach was bringing a similar proposal to his board.

The Port of Los Angeles might pride itself on handling more container cargo than any other facility in the nation, but its smaller neighbor and rival in Long Beach has a head start in accommodating a new generation of larger steamships.
Last month, the Port of Long Beach became the first facility on the West Coast to handle a steamship with a capacity of 8,000 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs--one-third larger than the more common 6,000 TEU ships.
The largest ships that Los Angeles has handled to date are 7,200 TEUs, and that port won't be able to accommodate the largest ships until late spring or summer 2004, alter a $160 million dredging project that began in January is partially completed.

Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - The Port of Los Angeles became the top U.S. international freight gateway by shipment value in 2003, according to a soon to be released report from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
America’s Freight Transportation Gateways shows that Los Angeles’ water port handled $17 billion in export trade and $105 billion in imports, totaling $122 billion in business handled by the port.
Los Angeles handled $10 billion more than the $112 billion in freight that moved through JFK International Airport, now the second-ranked international freight gateway in 2003.
