RUNCORN, a market town and river-port in the Northwich parliamentary division of Cheshire, England, on the S. of the estuary of the Mersey 16 m.
Runcorn is a sub-port of Manchester, with which it is connected by the Manchester Ship Canal, and has extensive wharfage and warehouse accommodation.
A transporter bridge between Runcorn and Widnes, with a suspended car worked by electricity to convey passengers and vehicles (the first bridge of the kind in England) was constructed in 1902.

Runcorn were founded in 1918 when football became a regular activity for the Highfield and Camden Tanneries Recreation Club.
In 1918 Runcorn became members of the auxiliary section of the Lancashire Combination and in the same season won Lancashire Junior Cup by beating Blackpool RAMC 2-0 in a replay at Anfield.
Runcorn also claimed football league scalps in the form of Notts County (1967/68), Southport (1977/78), Chester City (1987/88), and Wrexham (1988/89).

This gave Runcorn waterway connections with most of the interior of England through the canal system and with the sea along the River Mersey, thus forming the basis for the development of the Port of Runcorn.
In 1974 Runcorn Urban District Council merged with the Borough of Widnes to form the Borough of Halton.
Runcorn has two stations, Runcorn which is one of the major stops on the West Coast Mainline, serving as the last stop before Liverpool, and Runcorn East which is on the local line between Chester and Manchester.

In the middle of the 18th century Runcorn was effectively a cul-de-sac which was by-passed by the turnpike road built in 1786 on the line of the old Roman road between Chester and Warrington.
Runcorn now had access by an inland waterway to Cheshire, Lancashire and, via the Mersey, to the coastal ports of Great Britain, to the Irish Sea and thence to the Atlantic.
The port itself was a vital link for the development of the Industrial Revolution in the North West of England and in the Midlands.

This led to Runcorn gradually overtaking Chester as the main port for the county of Cheshire.
