Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Portable Media Center Review
Later branded as Portable Media Centers (see my CES 2004 photo gallery for images), these devices are just now starting to ship from a variety of manufacturers, including Creative, iRiver and Samsung.
Naturally, the center of the strategy is a Windows XP-based PC running Windows Media Player 10 (WMP 10, see my review); for even better experience, you could substitute a Media Center PC, which offers a remote control-accessible user interface for all your digital media tasks, and can be used to record TV shows.
But the PMC gives you a version of Mac OS X's "beach ball of death" to let you know you're going to be waiting a bit (Figure).

Creative Zen Portable Media Center Reviews. Portable Video Players (PVPs) Reviews by CNET.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The device is designed to work seamlessly with Windows Media Player 10.0 on any Windows XP computer, but those using Windows XP Media Center Edition will get the most out of the Zen PMC, given the device's ability to play recorded television content.
The Zen PMC is designed as the portable counterpart to WMP10 and its library; therefore, the majority of content on the device can mirror your PC, though typically in a more compressed form.
Additionally, the Zen PMC is compatible with the next-gen Windows DRM (formerly known as Janus), which will allow music and video subscribers to download and play licensed content on the device for as long as the subscription is valid.

The Portable Media Center (PMC) concept, initially known as "Media2Go", was first unveiled by Bill Gates at the 2003 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
PMC devices are intended to allow users to take digital media content from their Windows XP PCs with them for playback anytime, anywhere.
Creative says its Zen PMC, which was showcased earlier this year by Bill Gates during his CES keynote, features a 3.8-inch color LCD screen and an "ultra-fast" USB 2.0 port to transfer video, music or digital photos from a PC to the internal 20 GB hard drive.

A Portable Media Center with a 40-gigabyte hard drive is expected to hold up to 175 hours of video, 10,000 songs or 100,000 pictures, using Windows Media audio and video files.
