Portage Bay is an arm of Seattle, Washington's Lake Union and is part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
Its eastern limit is the entrance to the Montlake Cut.
It is spanned by the University Bridge, which carries Eastlake Avenue from Eastlake to the University District, and by the Portage Bay Viaduct, which carries Washington State Route 520 from Montlake to Capitol Hill.

The Portage Bay Shellfish Protection District was formed by the Whatcom County Council in 1998 after the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) prohibited harvesting of shellfish in portions of Portage Bay due to deteriorating water quality.
In October 2003, the Washington Department of Health approved the reopening of 625 acres in Portage Bay to shellfish harvesting.
There are nine sites in Portage Bay that the State Department of Health (DOH) uses to monitor water quality and to classify the harvesting area.

The bay bridge, which would be part of a completely new state Route 520 bridge crossing Lake Washington, would eliminate the current Montlake Interchange and add a six-lane interchange adjacent to the Washington Park Arboretum.
The interchange, using the bay bridge, would connect to the UW campus at Husky Stadium, where the Montlake-Pacific Street interchange would be expanded and rebuilt below current grade, she said.
She said the UW does support including car pool-bus lanes on the new span and thinks the new pontoons should be heavy enough to support "high-capacity transit," such as commuter trains.

In 1916 the water level of Lake Washington dropped by nearly nine feet when the Montlake Cut was completed, replacing the Black River as the lake's outlet in favor of Portage Bay and Lake Union.
With the opening of the Locks on May 8, 1917, there was finally a navigable passage from the lake to the sound.

In 1883, David Denny (1832-1903) and Thomas Burke (1849-1925) hire Chinese laborers to dig a canal across what is known as the Montlake Isthmus, the marshy land that seperates Union Bay (part of Lake Washington) with Portage Bay (part of Lake Union).
The log canal was dug in order to float logs from Union Bay to David Denny's Western Mill, which stood at the southern end of Lake Union.

SEATTLE — A man's crime spree of a home invasion and two carjackings this morning ended when he crashed one of the stolen vehicles into Portage Bay, near the Seattle Yacht Club, police said.
The man left with the resident's Nissan Pathfinder, but then apparently abandoned that vehicle and carjacked a second sport-utility vehicle nearby, a Volvo, said Seattle Police Department spokesman Scott Moss.
The carjacker then ran the SUV off the road and into Portage Bay, Moss said.
