Portage Creek is located at the mouth of Portage Creek, a tributary of the Nushagak River, 29 miles southeast of Dillingham.
Portage Creek was so named because it was used to portage boats from the Nushagak River to the Kvichak River.
A BIA school was established in 1963, and during the winter of 1964-65, 11 families lived in Portage Creek.

Bill is an accomplished flyfisher and had brought back salmon from a similar trip two years earlier, along with scarcely-believable tales of fabulous angling, but although I had a little flyrod experience, my most impressive fish had been a 14-pound channel cat, caught with spinning gear on 4-pound line.
Bill had fished a tiny stream called Montana Creek on his first trip, and remembered it had been a bit too far from Anchorage (about 90 miles north on the Parks Highway) to lure non-Alaskans from Anchorage, especially since there are numerous very good salmon streams much closer to town.

This is a "big town" with more that three stop lights and for Alaska, is also a culture shock as it could be almost anywhere USA except for the salmon smokeries and for the fact that the glacier fed Kenai river runs right through town.

Skunk Cabbage is a large leaf cabbage like plant that stinks but is eaten by bears as a natural laxative to over come winter blockage initiated by the bears as a means of preserving their den via constipation by the in gestation of gravel twigs and what not for this purpose.

Alaska Central filed for bankruptcy in 1909; the company afterwards became reorganized as the Alaska Northern Railroad.
The eventual route of the railroad from Kern Creek to Fairbanks was surveyed under the guidance of three men on the Alaska Engineering Commission, William Edes, Lt. Frederick Mears and Thomas Riggs.
The Alaska Railroad is their only link with civilization, since the Parks Highway is across the Susitna River, several miles to the west.

During the late 18th century, Grand Portage served as the inland headquarters for the North West Company and was the location for a summer rendezvous involving Indian families, French voyageurs, Scottish clerks, pays d'en haut wintering partners and Montreal and London agents.
Picnic tables are available by crossing a foot bridge at the mouth of Grand Portage Creek or driving east on County Road 17 across the Works Progress Administration (WPA) stone bridge and parking along a gravel road adjacent to the lakeside picnic grounds.
The Grand Portage footpath can be accessed at three main points: across from the vehicle parking lot at the fort, off Minnesota State Highway 61 and up County Road 17 to Old Highway 61 where a small parking area bisects the portage.

Henry McDowell: Henry was killed by a bear on Porcupine Creek, but the exact date is not known, although it was about 1938 or 1939.
He came to Alaska in 1904, and to Circle Hot Springs in 1907.
