Ohio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ohio's central position and its population gave it an important place during the Civil War, and the Ohio River was a vital artery for troop and supply movements, as were Ohio's railroads.
Ohio's southern border is defined by the Ohio River (with the border being at the 1793 low-water mark on the north side of the river), and much of the northern border is defined by Lake Erie.
Ohio was also a deciding factor in the 1948 presidential election when Democrat Harry S. Truman defeated Republican Thomas Dewey (who had won the state four years earlier) and in the 1976 presidential election when Democrat Jimmy Carter defeated Republican Gerald Ford by a slim margin in Ohio and took the election.

Portage refers to the practice of carrying a canoe or other boat over land to avoid an obstacle on the water route (such as rapids in a river), or between two water routes.
Small canoes can be portaged by carrying them inverted over one's shoulders and the center brace may be designed in the style of a yoke to facilitate this.
Places where portaging occurred often became temporary and then permanent settlements and the settlements sometimes were named for being on a portage, particularly in North America.

The Ohio River is formed by the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahelea at the Forks of the Ohio, and flows for 981 miles to Cairo.
The territory was divided into Ohio and Indiana territories in 1800, and in 1801, on the expiry of his term as delegate, he was appointed Governor of Indiana Territory and removed to the small French village of Vincennes, the capital of Indiana.
On the 19th and 27th of August 1804, a treaty with the Delawares and Piankishaws cleared all the land between the Vincennes--Louisville road and the Ohio and Wabash rivers, a frontage of 300 miles on the Ohio and 150 miles on the Wabash.

Pittsburgh PA Allegheny County Pennsylvania links directory
Allegheny county, southwestern Pennsylvania, U.S., consisting of a hilly region on the Allegheny Plateau bounded to the southeast by the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers and to the northeast by the Allegheny River.
The Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers converge in the centre of the county to form an area known as the Golden Triangle; this was a strategic point of contention between the French and the English, who fortified the area with Fort Duquesne (1754) and Fort Pitt (1761), respectively.
The river enters New York state where the Allegheny Reservoir is impounded at Allegany State Park; turning southwest, it continues for 120 miles (190 km), meandering to the southeast and again southwest and eventually joining the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to form the Ohio River.
