Houghton County named for Professor Douglass Houghton, a geologist in Michigan, was organized in 1845.
On March 19, 1845, this act was amended and Houghton County was established from parts of Marquette, Schoolcraft and Ontonagon Counties.
By this Act, the Board of Supervisors of Houghton County obtained 29,541 acres of land located in the counties of Baraga, Dickinson, Houghton, Iron, Marquette, Keweenaw, Menominee and Gogebic.

The territory composing this township was, prior to the organization of Union County, embraced in the counties of Delaware and Madison.
The township, as originally formed by the County Commissioners of Delaware County, included the northern portion of its present territory, and a large scope of the western portion of the present territory of Union County, extending northward to the northern boundary line of the county.
Benjamin Harrington, a native of Rhode Island, emigrated to this county and township in 1817.

Some Houghton County watersheds are shared with neighboring counties either upstream or downstream: six townships in Ontonagon County, three townships in Iron County, four townships in Baraga County, and parts of all five townships in Keweenaw County.
In addition, large areas of the county have numerous small creeks or ravines that drain directly to Lake Superior; these areas are labeled "Lake Superior Drainage" on the map.
