Typically, one level of the ship is fitted with railway tracks, and the ship has a door at the front or rear to give access to the wharves.
While railway vehicles can and are shipped on the decks or in the holds of ordinary ships, purpose-built train ferries are much quicker to load and unload, especially as several vehicles can be loaded or unloaded at once.
A portage railway overcomes a lack of a navigatable stretch of a river.

On turnpikes, bridges, canals and railways $53,352,649 was spent between 1826 and 1843, the public debt in the latter year reaching the high-water mark of $42,188,434.

 Montreal & Bytown Railway
Three railways were to be included: The Montreal and Bytown Railway Company which would follow the north bank of the Ottawa River from Montreal and would traverse the route of the previously proposed Carillon and Grenville railway; the Brockville and Ottawa Railway Company and the Bytown and Pembroke Railway Company.
Interestingly the original charter stated that the railway was to cross the Ottawa River between Carillon and Grenville.
The railway was to issue bonds, payable in 1874, which would be turned over to Sykes, de Bergue and Company and they in turn would sell them in England.

The little 30m portage from Bell to Balsam actually has a railway with a dolly you steer your boat onto, then pull over with a rope.

The narrow-gauge (42") Portage Railway, only 1 1/8 miles long, was designed around two tiny seven-ton four-wheel (0-4-0) saddle-tank wood-burning steam locomotives built in 1888 by the H.K. Porter Co. of Pittsburgh and purchased second-hand from the E.B. Eddy Co. in Hull, Quebec.
This railway operated quite successfully for many years but, with the development of roads and the increasing use of automobiles and trucks, it became less and less profitable and in 1959 ceased operations.
The aim of the Railway Society was to build and operate a tourist steam railway featuring the "Portage Flyer", and, at the same time, preserve some of the history of the steam transportation era in the Huntsville and Lake of Bays district.

The CP station from MacGregor (west of Portage) was moved to Portage and converted to a private residence.
This was owned by the Canadian Northern Railway and connected to what is now the CN Gladstone Subdivision just west of West Tower.

 Bowling Green Transportation Routes
(Barter p 18) In 1836, the General Assembly of Kentucky, passed a charter for Bowling Green Portage Railway, (Kentucky General Assembly, 1836) whose purpose was to haul passengers and steamboat freight to and from the boat landing on the Barren River to the town center.
The Portage Railway was horse drawn, (Kentucky Library Collection) and was the first tramway of its type to be equipped with iron cars.
The reason for this conclusion is that the Portage Railroad, which was built and operated by the river businessmen, had already defined the direction of city rail growth through the riverfront.

My grandfather, David Peden, on emigrating to Canada from Scotland in 1907, was a security guard with the railway in Portage la Prairie and his son, George, was later employed in the C.N. Stores Dept. there for many years.
My dad, William Peden, worked for the Railway Mail Service for forty years and at the time of his retirement in 1958 was running on the C.P.R. mail line between Winnipeg and Fort William (now part of Thunder Bay) Ontario.
Uncle Fred, from Portage la Prairie, was a C.N. conductor on the Transcontinental passenger train running between Winnipeg and Waterous, Saskatchewan on the main line at the time of his retirement.

One of the conditions of Confederation was the building of a railway by the newly constituted Dominion Government to connect Halifax with the St. Lawrence at or near Quebec.
The railway lay idle from late 1910 until July 25, 1911 when it was bought by the Canadian Northern Railway as part of its new Montreal to Ottawa line.
Lawrence and Hudson Railway is formed by merging the CP Rail routes in southern Ontario and Quebec with its Delaware and Hudson subsidiary in northern USA.

Started in 1863 as a nature park, The St. Thomas Street Railway Company developed the area in the 1890's as a way to promote business on its recently electrified tramway.
That railway was first constructed to span the land between Lake of the Bays and Peninsula Lake, about 200 kilometers northeast of Toronto at a time when the lakes and rivers of that area were the only available transport routes.
In 1984, the locomotives and cars were put up for sale and bought by the heritage group, Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway Society which wished to restore the portage railway trains.

 CP Rail Station Portage la Prairie - Home
The Portage la Prairie CP Rail Station is a 112 year-old building that was still being used by the company's train and maintenance crews until it was damaged by fire on November 1, 2002.
A public invitation was extended to anyone interested in discussing the possibilities for the preservation of the station if CP Rail did not plan to repair and continue use of it.
After gathering as much public input as possible, a committee was formed to organize the task of approaching Canadian Pacific Railway to determine their intentions for the station, and express interest in preserving the building in its current location -- if the fire damage was not too severe.

The portage railway ingeniously surmounted the Allegheny summit through a series of steep inclines over which the passenger and freight cars were hauled up by means of stationary hoisting engines.
By 1855, the New Allegheny Portage Railroad began operations with a combined rail and canal operations which eliminated the need for the incline operations, but still was slow in comparison with a strictly railroad system.
Railway shops construction began in 1850 with Wright conveying the deed for the land to the railroad in 1851.

 Tourist Railway review : Portage Flyer in Huntsville, ONTARIO
The Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway and Navigation Co. (HLofBR&NC) has some wonderful heritage.
The very original Porter 0-4-0 engines are not present.````On the plus side, the museum/train station has some great displays and artefacts from the era.
The highlight is a ~5 minute circa 1910 colour home movie of the train leaving the North Portage landing.

 An Overview of Pennsylvania Mapping Circa 1850 to 1900
The Portage Railroad went through the first railway tunnel driven in the United States, the Staple Bend Tunnel, today part of the Allegheny Portage Railway National Historic Site.
After about twenty-five years service, this tunnel was abandoned in the late 1850’s (along with the rest of the Portage Railroad) and lay derelict for 140 years until reborn in 2001 as part of a bicycle path.
