Pathways to Philosophy Distance Learning Program :: PORTAL
It is well known that philosophy teaches one to argue a case more forcefully, to express our thoughts better, and also to be more flexible and creative in our approach to the problems that face us in our work and our daily lives.
On the contrary, the craftsmen selfishly pursue their business activities in order to satisfy their bodily desires while all the time neglecting the sort of self-examination that might result in self-imposed restraint.
While suggesting that there are more and less virtuous business people, Geoffrey Klempner ultimately argues that business is conducted in an arena outside of the realm of ethics.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel - ArtPolitic Encyclopedia of Politics : Information Portal
Hegel introduced a system for understanding the history of philosophy (and of the world itself) that is often called a "dialectic": a progression in which each successive moment emerges as a working-out of the self-contradictions inherent in the preceding moment.
Elements of the Philosophy of Right (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts) 1819
Hegel used this system to explain the whole of the history of philosophy, science, art, politics and religion, but many contemporary critics point out that Hegel often seems to gloss over the realities of history in order to fit it into his dialectical mold.

In his book on the history of Australian philosophy, academic James Franklin quotes Barry Humphries who summed up the Push as 'a fraternity of middle-class desperates, journalists, drop-out academics, gamblers and poets manqués [failed poets], and their doxies [mistresses]'.
Sydney was a smaller city in the 50s, and the urban heart was vibrant and attracted artists, journalists, actors and students.

Perhaps as some scholars [60] argue Nagasaki was a narrow portal on the outside world in the Tokugawa era, but in the travel accounts examined above, this portal was more like a permanently ajar sluice through which religion, philosophy, and the arts continued to gush unabated from China.
Just as David L. Howell and Ronald Toby suggest cross-cultural relations during the Tokugawa era need to be reassessed, the travel accounts of Hishiya Heishichi, Furukawa Kosh?ken, and Tachibana Nankei also suggest Sino-Japanese relations, and Japanese perceptions of the foreign, were fundamentally shaped by the environment of Chinese Nagasaki.
In the Tokugawa traveler’s mind, it was common to use a Chinese cultural frame of reference when describing Nagasaki.
