Portamento - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Portamento is a musical term currently used to mean pitch bending or sliding, and in 16th century polyphonic writing refers to a type of musical ornamentation.
Portamento can often be generated automatically on synthesizers, where a parameter setting can be used to control the speed at which an oscillator moves to a new pitch.
In MIDI sequencing, portamento can be generated by using a channel message that creates a sliding effect by smoothly changing pitch from the last note played to the pitch of the currently playing note.

Portamento means 'to carry' or glide from one to the next so rapidly, that the intermediate tones, although sounding, are not defined long enough to be noticed by most listeners.
Portamento should not be confused with the slur or glissando.
Portamento is not the same as a slur or glissando.

Controller CC5 is used to set the portamento time, how long it takes to change the pitch by a semitone, which has a range of 0-127.
The portamento effect does not require the playing to be legato, the pitch will always slide from the last note played, however long you pause between the two.
If chords are played with the portamento effect then the sliding becomes haphazard as any note from the first chord could slide to any note of the second.

Ronald Caravan states that portamento is produced primarily by manipulating the shape of the oral cavity by means of tongue position changes.
The second portamento is accomplished in a similar fashion to the first; B4 to C5 involves essentially the same fingerings as G2 to F3.
The long downward portamento from this G to D-sharp 5 is executed by slowly lowering the second finger of the left hand and loosening the embouchure.

The fundamental pitch trajectory contains certainly vibrato and portamento, intonation is retained, and expressive timing is retained to a certain degree, as far as there are changes in pitch to signal the onsets of new notes.
Thus, if vibrato and portamento is controllable indeed, we now have to tackle the question in what way it is controlled, and what are good rules or functions describing these transitions.
These functions, or algorithmic models, are then fitted to the data by an optimization procedure that walks through parameter space and from each position tests the direction in which the fit of model and data becomes better, climbing the hill always in the direction in which it is steepest.

In order to create a portamento or glide in Csound, you must first familiarize yourself with some of the score functions.
Every time a new note is triggered in this Csound portamento instrument, an envelope is used to slide from the previous pitch and previous amplitude to the new pitch and amplitude.
The difference is that the note glides into the next note before it is played instead of sliding from the last pitch to the new pitch.

The term "portamento" in Mahler symphonies usually signifies a slight glissando in legato passages.
I must say I haven't heard a performance of Mahler where an articulated passage marked "molto portamento" (such as the solo trumpet part in the 5th movement of the 2nd symphony or the Posthorn solo in the 3rd) was played in anything other than the normal tongued tenuto style.
When in the 5th movement he writes "molto portamento" in an articulated passage with tenuto marks over each note, I believe a soft, but clear attack, with a hair-pin on each note achieves the desired effect.

For example, when a violinist plays two notes of different pitches in succession she may choose to change the pitch in an abrupt manner or she may slide from the first pitch to the second by sliding her finger along the fingerboard in a continuous manner.
However, the violinist may also change bow direction at some point during the slide, the violinist may change the finger that depresses the string during the slide, or the violinist may change which string is bowed during the slide.
For example, in a string portamento transition between two notes C and G, there may be an initial slide from say C to D, then a step from D to F#, and then a final slide from F# to G. This shape, consisting of slide-step-slide, is typical of many string portamenti.

Portamento is an inherently difficult thing to do on a sample playback device.
This is because the unit has to bend one sample up (or down) and at some point grab the next sample from the next key range and have it bent down (or up) and then start bending it.
This is why portamento is not normally found on sample playback units.

Since portamento is a functionality of FL Studio, the synths do not have the feature built into them seperately, and as a result, neither do the VSTi versions of the synths.
Portamento is an important feature, I use it in nearly all of my lead playing, and that's what I would expect from any VA-type synth.
Portamento is a lot more expressive with playing the synth, and gives you wonderful bends when overlapping consecutive notes.

Portamento is also possible by moving the teeth lightly on the reed from about midway down to further away (towards the shoulder) from the tip.
However, the portamento will not always be smooth; jumps in partials are unavoidable, much like portamento harmonics on the contrabass (sounds that are reminiscent of seagulls).
Another use of teeth on the reed, this time as an isolated portamento scream, is written by Helmut Lachenmann in Dal Niente (Interieur III) for solo clarinet (Example #30).

When using a patch with portamento, the portamento time parameter controls how fast the synth glides from one note to the next.
For example, you may be able to alter the types or frequencies of the oscillators, switch effect types, turn portamento on and off, and alter a sound's envelope by sending sys-ex data.
Generally the easiest way to accomplish this is to use the synth's buttons or knobs to send the appropriate sys-ex to your sequencer while recording; then, when the track is played, the same sys-ex data will be sent back to the synth.

The opening solo in George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" is a remarkable blend of trill, glissando, and portamento.
In jazz mood-music, commercial jingles, sound tracks and popular music the saxophones and woodwinds have long been requested to scoop, fall-off, and bend notes to embellish melodic and harmonic lines.
Another substitute for a portamento is a very rapid chromatic glissando while flutter-tonguing.

At that time I was experimenting with different electronic genres and I didn't want a name that would tie me to one genre (such as Trance Control).
So I took a look at the knobs and sliders on my Roland MC-505 (my only synth at that time), and seeing the portamento knob, I decided that "PortaMento" would be my artist name, since the word has such a nice flow.
The word refers to a smooth transition between two notes, and although I don't really use a lot of portamento, I think many of my tracks are characterized by smooth transitions.

Renata Scotto's wisdom on proper use of portamento and legato (from her 1984 autobio "More Than A Diva") eerily foreshadows the Opera World of the new millenium.
A portamento should be the loving act of carrying the voice from one note to another; legato hides the act in smooth discretion.
Callas knew how to use portamento with art, but many singers who think they follow in her path misunderstand the concept and turn portamento into glissando, lazy and rude.
