	Clavius (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The crater is one of the older formations on the lunar surface and was likely formed during the Nectarian period about 4 billion years ago.
		The crater floor retains a diminished remnant of a central massif, which lies between Clavius C and N. The relative smoothness of the floor and the low size of the central peaks may indicate that the crater surface was formed some time after the original impact.
		Notable nearby craters include Scheiner to the west; Blancanus to the southwest; Maginus in the northeast, and Longomontanus to the northwest.

		On the crater’s circular rim I saw 4 smaller craters superimposed, Rutherfurd and Porter on the east, and Clavius K and L on the opposite side.
		This young crater with a diameter of 128 km and a depth of 5000 meters is a typical example of a complex crater with terraced walls, central peaks, and a relatively flat floor full of hills.

		There are smaller craters on the south, one of which Laméch declared to be subject to occasional obscuration in a manner similar to what Schröter found in connection with the great crater A. On the northern portion are numerous hills, craterlets and a low ring.
		Porter, using the 60-in reflector of the Mt Wilson Observatory, found 11 July 1929, a rough circle of hills west of A, a cleft from north to south skirting the western side of A, which then bends west and passes betwee some hills on the southand ends at a portion of the inner ring.
		He also found a crater to the north-east of A, and five shallow clefts from the western part of the inner ring toward the rough circle of hills west of A. There was also a short branch cleft to the great cleft on the northern part of the interior, and many mounds or landswells.

		Date Observed: 9/14/05 10:02 PM Comments: Small, circular crater just west of the Riphaeus Mountains on the eastern edge of Ocean Procellarum directly east of crater Hansteen with the intervening mare between the two devoid of features, approximately mid-way between craters Kepler and Gassendi.
		While it is nice to speculate that 5 monks may have described its origin from a meteorite in 1178, the current evidence suggests what they saw was most likely due to their witnessing a meter (Beta Taurid meteor) burning up in a trajectory that was limited to their field of view.
		Date Observed: 8/10/05 9:30 PM Comments: Large, well-defined crater- the 1st of a chain of three (Theophilus, Cyrillis, Catharina) lying at the western junction of Mare Nectaris and Sinus Asperitatis- with prominent terraced walls, smooth floor and prominent central peaks.

		Moving on towards the south pole, and onto RUKL 73 were the trio of featires, Gruemberger/Cysatus and the craters Moretus and Moretus E. All were brilliantly shadowed with deep crescents of darkness.
		Right up against the wall of Crater Short was what appeared to be a crumbling wall of a huge crater.
		South of Moretus was a dark vertical shadow, which I now know was the rims of the row of craters south of Short and Short B and A, and some crater walls from unknown (to me) craters.

		What caught my attention was the stunning shadow play along the basin's rough eastern wall, and among the "lesser" craters that interrupt opposite ends of the eastern wall — Rutherfurd (48x54 km) and Porter (52 km) — and among the chain of even smaller impacts that dot Clavius' relatively smooth floor.
		A subsequent observation of Clavius on the morning of Aug. 25 (lunar day 20½) as the Moon approached last quarter showed very little in the way of shadows...which says something about the differences in the structure of the east and west walls.
		The small (230-km), dark-floored lunar basin Grimaldi on the Moon's western limb is one of the darkest features on the Moon...excluding shadows.

		In the lunar north, you cannot help but see the long, deep scar of the Alpine Valley slashing its way across the lunar Alps.
		Although you cannot help but be drawn visually to this crater, let's start at the southern limb near the terminator and work our way up.
		Caught on the southeast wall is Rutherford with its central peak and crater Porter on the northeast wall.
