Clavius (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The crater is one of the older formations on the lunar surface and was likely formed during the Nectarian period about 4 billion years ago.
The crater floor retains a diminished remnant of a central massif, which lies between Clavius C and N. The relative smoothness of the floor and the low size of the central peaks may indicate that the crater surface was formed some time after the original impact.
Notable nearby craters include Scheiner to the west; Blancanus to the southwest; Maginus in the northeast, and Longomontanus to the northwest.

The Maria, or seas, are the grey smooth plains on the lunar surface.
On the crater’s circular rim I saw 4 smaller craters superimposed, Rutherfurd and Porter on the east, and Clavius K and L on the opposite side.
This young crater with a diameter of 128 km and a depth of 5000 meters is a typical example of a complex crater with terraced walls, central peaks, and a relatively flat floor full of hills.

 Posidonius Lunar Ray
There are smaller craters on the south, one of which Laméch declared to be subject to occasional obscuration in a manner similar to what Schröter found in connection with the great crater A. On the northern portion are numerous hills, craterlets and a low ring.
Porter, using the 60-in reflector of the Mt Wilson Observatory, found 11 July 1929, a rough circle of hills west of A, a cleft from north to south skirting the western side of A, which then bends west and passes betwee some hills on the southand ends at a portion of the inner ring.
He also found a crater to the north-east of A, and five shallow clefts from the western part of the inner ring toward the rough circle of hills west of A. There was also a short branch cleft to the great cleft on the northern part of the interior, and many mounds or landswells.

Date Observed: 9/14/05 10:02 PM Comments: Small, circular crater just west of the Riphaeus Mountains on the eastern edge of Ocean Procellarum directly east of crater Hansteen with the intervening mare between the two devoid of features, approximately mid-way between craters Kepler and Gassendi.
While it is nice to speculate that 5 monks may have described its origin from a meteorite in 1178, the current evidence suggests what they saw was most likely due to their witnessing a meter (Beta Taurid meteor) burning up in a trajectory that was limited to their field of view.
Date Observed: 8/10/05 9:30 PM Comments: Large, well-defined crater- the 1st of a chain of three (Theophilus, Cyrillis, Catharina) lying at the western junction of Mare Nectaris and Sinus Asperitatis- with prominent terraced walls, smooth floor and prominent central peaks.

We were enabled to discover by our latitude that we had a current of fifteen miles per twenty-four hours, setting to the northward; and from the violent ripples we frequently met with, were induced to believe that its rate was much greater, and concluded it to set also westerly.
These islands are all evidently of volcanic production; every mountain and hill is the crater of an extinguished volcano; and thousands of smaller fissures, which have burst from their sides, give them the most dreary, desolate, and inhospitable appearance imaginable.
In some spots a half acre of ground would be so completely covered with them, as to appear as though it was impossible for another to get in the space; they would all keep their eyes fixed constantly on us, and we at first supposed them prepared to attack us.

After all, Callisto's heavily cratered surface is a frigid -220o F and is scarcely protected from the ravages of space by a extraordinarily thin CO2 atmosphere.
The example of porphyrins on the Moon is particulary intriguing in the context of the Galileo flybys and Sagan's subsequent criteria for life.
The 1969 discovery of lunar porphyrins probably says less about the chances for biochemistry there, than about how common their generation may be elsewhere in the universe.

A lunar map will help you to identify the different lunar features, so it is one of the basic things you need when you start observing the Moon.
Roughly, the lunar landscape can be divided in two types of surface, the dark areas or Maria and the light areas or Terrae.
The lunar phases are caused by the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

The lunar crust is composed of a variety of primary elements, including uranium, thorium, potassium, oxygen, silicon, magnesium, iron, titanium, calcium, aluminum and hydrogen.
For this reason, and because of the limited economic opportunities on Luna, it was very common for Lunites to leave Luna, either to serve in the Stellar Consortium's Vanguard or to make their way elsewhere in the galaxy.
They constructed a new Lunar City beneath the surface of Luna in the deep caves to which they had fled, making it accessible only through a specialized landing pad buried deep in a crater on the surface.

Lunar Prospector destined for a Watery Grave   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Scientists estimate that a direct impact into a lunar crater could dislodge up to 40 pounds of water vapor that may be detectable from ground- and space-based observatories.
Since its launch in January 1998, Lunar Prospector has scored one scientific triumph after another including a precision gravity map of the lunar surface, global maps of elemental composition, the detection of mini-magnetospheres related to large impact sites, and evidence pointing toward a small iron-rich lunar core.

Some of the topography is unknown because a portion of the crater is permanently in shadow and optical telescopes cannot see what is inside the darkened area.
Similarly, Earth-based radar cannot be used to map the entire area because the tall rim on the Earth facing side of the crater shields the interior from view.
The Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO), a group of amateur and professional astronomers, has issued a call for all lunar enthusiasts to monitor the south polar region of the Moon on July 31 for visible signs of Prospector's impact.

Taking into account all methods of dispersal, including transport by wind, birds, and drifting on the ocean surface, Duncan Porter, a botanist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, estimates that 378 original introductions could account for the 522 indigenous plant species known to grow on the islands.
Of these natural introductions, 59% were a result of transport by birds, 32% by wind transport, and 9% by drifting on the ocean surface.

South of Moretus was a dark vertical shadow, which I now know was the rims of the row of craters south of Short and Short B and A, and some crater walls from unknown (to me) craters.
