KATHERINE ANNE PORTER'S STORY "Magic" is the second shortest piece of original fiction she published.1 Only 1,207 words long, it was written in the early months of 1928 and published in that summer's issue of transition.

By the time Porter wove her story around the tale she had heard, it incorporated her own physical, financial, and moral struggles played out against a backdrop of voodoo culture and opposing concepts of New Orleans.

The limitations of Ketchum's volume in this regard are apparent in examining, for example, its scant coverage of three of New Hampshire's major Federal-era cabinetmakers, Langley Boardman and the partnership of Judkins and Senter, both of Portsmouth, and Porter Blanchard of Concord.
Concord's Porter Blanchard (1788-1871) is unlisted by Ketchum despite the survival of bills and furniture supplied to the New Hampshire State House in 1819.
Connecticut cabinetmakers Aaron Chapin of Hartford and Silas Cheney of Litchfield are absent from Ketchum despite the existence of fully documented sideboards discussed and illustrated in Bjerkoe and elsewhere.
