Porter J. Goss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In an interview on March 3, 2004 Goss described himself as 'Not qualified' for a job within the CIA, although he was referring to a position as a case officer.
On the morning of September 11, Goss, Graham, Kyl and members of the House Intelligence Committee were having breakfast with General Mahmoud Ahmad, who had earlier organised the transfer of US$100,000 via Saeed Sheikh to the lead 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta, in a top-secret conference room on the fourth floor of the U.S. Capitol.
Goss and Graham made it clear that their goal was not to identify specific wrongdoing: Graham said the inquiry would not play "the blame game about what went wrong from an intelligence perspective,", and Goss said, "This is not a who-shall-we-hang type of investigation.

 Congressman Porter Goss
BIOGRAPHY OF CONGRESSMAN PORTER J. A 28-year resident of Southwest Florida, Porter Goss was elected to Congress in 1988 with 72 percent of the vote.
Goss has compiled a strong conservative voting record on fiscal matters, focusing his efforts on five major legislative areas: budget reform, health care, congressional reform, the environment and foreign affairs.
Goss joined the Rules Committee in 1993, relinquishing his seats on the now-dissolved Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee to accept the coveted appointment.

Online NewsHour: President Bush Nominates Rep. Porter Goss as CIA Director -- August 10, 2004
Porter Goss gave in to the White House, and so that report was ipso facto, incomplete, because it contained lots of stuff, but nothing on what the president was told before 9/11.
I think Porter Goss is well-qualified from an intelligence point of view, but I agree with Congresswoman Pelosi who earlier in the program pointed out that it's not wise to have our intelligence governed by a highly partisan political person.
I remember two years ago when Porter Goss and myself and Nancy Pelosi, who is very outspoken and after all she's the Democratic leader, so she has a right to say that.

Goss Reportedly Rebuffed Senior Officials at CIA (washingtonpost.com)
Goss and the White House asked Kappes to delay his decision until tomorrow, but they are actively considering his replacement, several current and former CIA officials said.
Goss has adopted a management style that relies heavily on former committee staff aides, several of whom are former mid-level CIA employees not well regarded within the CIA's Directorate of Operations.
The officials were dismayed by the reaction and were concerned that Goss has isolated himself from the agency's senior staff, said former clandestine service officers aware of the offers.

Goss' statement has been presented by skeptics as evidence that he is more than willing to stump for the president, and hence is unable to be objective.
Porter Goss, nominated earlier this week by President George W. Bush to head the Central Intelligence Agency, is likely to face a contentious confirmation process even if Democrats aren't openly opposing his nomination.
Goss said, "Clearly not making the progress at Yongbyon and other places because we've called their bluff successfully." On purely technical grounds, this could not be further from the truth.

 CNN.com - Bush nominates Goss to head CIA - Aug 11, 2004
Goss represents a district in southwest Florida and is not running for re-election in the fall.
Goss has said that he supports one of the recommendations -- the creation of a national intelligence director position -- but in hearings last week, he urged caution in considering legislation on the issue.
And some questioned whether Goss was too close to the CIA to shake things up at the agency, which was the focus of some critical comments in a recent report by the independent 9/11 commission.

Spies Like Goss - How much of a hack is Bush's CIA nominee? By Fred Kaplan
At least since June, Goss has been campaigning to be the next CIA director, and in that time he has served energetically as a shill for Bush's re-election.
That Senate committee would have to confirm Goss' nomination before he could take the job.
It is for such reasons, perhaps, that John D. Rockefeller IV, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, has described Goss to his aides as " too political " to be placed in charge of the CIA.

On the morning of September 11, the three lawmakers Bob Graham, Porter Goss and Jon Kyl (who were part of the Congressional delegation to Pakistan) were having breakfast on Capitol Hill with General Ahmad, the alleged "money-man" (to use the FBI expression) behind the 9/11 hijackers.

Bush Nominates Rep. Goss to Run CIA (washingtonpost.com)
President Bush nominated Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.), a CIA officer-turned-politician, as director of central intelligence yesterday and said he would rely on Goss's counsel on the politically volatile issue of intelligence reform in the midst of a presidential campaign.
Goss becomes the nominee at a time of historic demands on the intelligence community, with an elevated terrorist threat level in three major cities, a high-tempo hunt for al Qaeda around the world and a boiling insurgency in Iraq.
Although Goss has hammered the CIA in the recent past for its performance in Iraq and before Sept. 11 -- at one time calling its human intelligence "dysfunctional" -- he is viewed as a friend of the CIA to the extent that some consider him too friendly to the agency.

Goss, a former Republican congressman, has put at least four former Capitol Hill Republican staffers into top positions in his CIA office and has given them broad authority to make personnel and restructuring decisions, the current and former intelligence officials said.

Moore interview exposes CIA nominee. 13/08/2004. ABC News Online
Porter Goss, the man chosen to head the CIA, believes he is unqualified to work for the agency, according to an interview he gave in March to filmmaker Michael Moore's for him Bush-bashing polemic Fahrenheit 9/11.
Mr Goss, who has officially resigned as chairman of the powerful House of Representatives intelligence committee, was an American spy in Latin America in the 1960s, during one of the hottest periods of the Cold War.
The interview comes ahead of Mr Goss's confirmation in the US Senate, which is expected to be a rough ride.

AlterNet: Porter Goss' WIA – Worthless Intelligence Agency
Goss is a highly political bureaucrat, who raised eyebrows when he gave speeches earlier this year attacking John Kerry for slashing intelligence funding without mentioning that, in 1995, he himself had co-sponsored a measure calling for firing 20 percent of all CIA personnel over five years.
The new head of the CIA, Porter Goss, is now setting about knocking off all such messengers and their supporters still inside the CIA because the agency, despite its frequent co-option and misuse by presidents, still retains a vestigial role as a truth-teller.
It is interesting that Goss has begun his shake-up of the CIA by forcing out the director and deputy director of operations, even though this is not where the alleged failures of the CIA in recent years occurred.

The Coming Senate Battle: Open the Porter Goss File
Porter Goss was a young CIA officer assigned to JM/WAVE.
Goss is the darling of the southern Florida right wing, and has been, dating back to his CIA days from 1961-71, when he participated in the efforts to assassinate or overthrow Fidel Castro in Havana.
Later, Goss was sent to London and then Paris, where he was involved in the infiltration of labor organizations, until he developed a near-fatal infection and was forced, officially, to retire from the spy world.
