Portfolio (finance) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In building up an investment portfolio a financial institution will typically conduct its own investment analysis, whilst a private individual may make use of the services of a financial advisor or a financial institution which offers portfolio management services.
Holding a portfolio is part of an investment and risk-limiting strategy called diversification.
Portfolio management involves deciding what assets to include in the portfolio, given the goals of the portfolio owner and changing economic conditions.

 - HISPANIC Trends.com - October 2002 - Finance & Investing
Building a laddered portfolio entails buying a series of bonds with different maturities spread out over your investment time frame.
For example, in a 10-year laddered portfolio, you might purchase bonds that mature in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 years.
With a laddered portfolio, you’ll receive greater returns than from holding only short-term bonds, and with lower risk than holding only long-term bonds.

 Finance
Harry Markowitz (1952, 1959) realized that as the "fundamentalist" notion relied on expectations of the future, then the element of risk must come into play and thus profitable use could be made of the newly developed expected utility theory of John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern (1944).
As noted, the idea of an optimal portfolio allocation had already been considered by Keynes, Hicks and Kaldor in their theories of money, and thus it was a logical step for James Tobin (1958) to add money to Markowitz's story and thus obtain the famous "two-fund separation theorem".
Intuitively, if the returns from an option can be replicated by a portfolio of other assets, then the value of the option must be equal to the value of that portfolio, or else there will be arbitrage opportunities.

Balanced Portfolio for Retirement: Re: Balanced portfolio inquiry
The conclusion is a 50:50 portfolio will have a 95% chance of lasting 30 years if you draw it down at a 4% rate.
The idea here is you rebalance your portfolio quarterly where you take out 1% (on the 4% plan) and buy a 2 year CD to “recharge” your 2 year cash reserves fund that you use to pay living expenses.
This 2 year reserve “bucket” that is outside your portfolio gives you a cushion where you can try to stretch your dollars out to 3 or 4 years or even get a part time job if you are worried.

And a commodoties-only portfolio would have been just plain lucky - but also exposed to serious market uncertainties, and risks.
