PORTHCAWL, a seaport and urban district in the midparliamentary division of Glamorganshire, South Wales, 30 m.
The urban district (formed in 1893) is conterminous with the civil parish of Newton Nottage, which, in addition to Porthcawl proper, built on the sea-front, comprises the ancient village of Nottage, 1 m.
The climate of Porthcawl is bracing, and the rainfall (averaging 25 in.) is about the lowest on the South Wales coast.

The RNLI has today announced (23 Nov) that Porthcawl Helmsman, Aileen Jones is to be awarded the Institution’s Bronze Medal for Gallantry for her part in the rescue of two fishermen on August 24, 2004.
The Porthcawl Lifeboat was informed by MRCC Swansea that The Mumbles Lifeboat was on stand by for them, and Helmsman Aileen Jones looking at the casualty’s predicament requested her immediate launch.
Porthcawl lifeboat was launched at 11:15 today and carried out one of the most difficult rescues of the year so far.

I would strongly suggest that you obtain a copy of the relevant OS maps as soon as possible after you arrive, or before then if possible - the one covering the Porthcawl area is Sheet 170 (Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda), and you may also want to get hold of Sheet 171 (Cardiff and Newport).
It should be signposted from the middle of Porthcawl, but any local map will show Kenfig Lake, around which the reserve is centred.
Most birders work their way around the lake, checking the scrub along the way, or alternatively, you can take the very pleasant walk westwards to the sea via Sker House - good migrant opportunities, and there may be something of interest on the shore or on the sea.

He argued that: “The visual impact of a windfarm in the specific location of this proposal would be so prominent when viewed from Porthcawl and its immediate area that I consider that the harmful effects are sufficient to outweigh the benefits of this particular proposal.” The Inspector recommended that planning permission be not given.
The Porthcawl Civic Trust argues that the immediate threat is to Porthcawl but if this interpretation of the renewable energy policy ihas become the norm, other areas of Wales will not be able to resist applications from windfarm developers on environmental impact grounds.

I visit Porthcawl often as it's just down the road from my home.
Porthcawl can also be reached from junction 37(see map).
It is a large quiet beach popular with surfers (not the internet type) There is a dog ban on the beach April~Sept. There is a huge car park, (£2:50 per day)with a shop and toilets about 100yds from the beach.

We spoke to 650 tourists, showed them all a photomontage of what the proposed wind farm will look like, and asked them simply whether they'd be 'more likely', 'just as likely' or 'less likely' to return to the resort if the wind farm went ahead.
The Greenpeace polling team didn't reveal their own opinions (or the fact that Greenpeace supports offshore wind) until after the visitor had answered - in fact many people assumed we were opposing the project!
