As well as the main station on the Cambrian Coast route, there is also the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) station and the Harbour station (shown here with locomotive Linda) of the Ffestiniog Railway.
Tywyn is the terminus of the narrow-gauge Talyllyn Railway, whose Wharf terminus is a short walk from the main line station.
The old railway track from Morfa Mawddach at the south end of the bridge towards Dolgellau, closed in the 1960s, is now a track for walkers, horses and cycles, known as the Mawddach Trail, seen here at Penmaenpool where the old signalbox and a signal have been retained as relics.

 The WHR route: Beddgelert to Porthmadog
The route of the Porthmadog cross-town link with the Ffestiniog Railway's Harbour Station is mostly that of the Croesor Tramway, and passes through the largely non-residential north-eastern edge of the town.
The view is towards Porthmadog; trains for Harbour will pass to the left of the Pen y Mount station building in the middle distance, whereas the WHR(P) line runs to its right.
Approaching Porthmadog the trackbed runs parallel for a distance with the existing WHR (Porthmadog) line operated by the WHR Ltd., passing its Pen y Mount station (not a station on the original line; the name comes from the adjacent farm).

 The Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog)
The earliest and perhaps the most famous is the Ffestiniog Railway's Harbour Station but Porthmadog also has a Railtrack station linking it to the national rail network and, just across the road, the Welsh Highland Railway's new station.
Porthmadog is a picturesque Welsh town situated 'in the corner' where the Lleyn peninsula meets the main welsh coast, a delightful tourist centre in its own right the town also boasts three railway stations.
The Welsh Highland is very much a railway in process of restoration, currently under a mile separates the railways headquarters from its more remote terminus at Pen y Mount farm but the rail journey, normally behind historic steam haulage, is well worthwhile.

Shops, restaurants, a childrens playground and the Ffestiniog steam railway station are all within 5 minutes walk; there are lovely sandy beaches at Borth y Gest (1 km) and Black Rock Sands (3 km).
It is ideally placed for watching the comings and goings around the harbour in this pleasant part of town.

Located on the Irish Sea coast, Porthmadog has a small harbour where ships used to load with slate carried on the many local narrow gauge railways that terminated there.
Today, Porthmadog has termini for the Ffestiniog Railway at the south of the town, and for the Welsh Highland Railway(Porthmadoc), on the old main line sidings.
Porthmadog also has a station on the Standard Gauge Cambrian Coast line.

The world famous and oldest narrow gauge railway is located by the Harbour at the beginning of the High Street.
Just three minutes walk from the hotel, is opposite the main railway station, the Welsh Highland Railway operates a regular service of steam and diesel hauled trains along a 3/4 mile long narrow gauge line with views towards the Glaslyn Valley.
In the 1870's it was estimated that over a thousand vessels used the harbour in any one year and at its peak in 1873 over 116,000 tons of Blaenau slate left Porthmadog for all parts of the world.

The next section of the railway to be rebuilt will be from Rhyd Ddu to Porthmadog Harbour Station.

In this recording the Single Fairlie 0-4-4T 'Taliesin' is heard starting from Harbour Station and passing from part way across the Cob with a train for Tan-y-Bwlch made up of vintage carriages on 7th May 2001.
The majority of passengers travelling on the Ffestiniog Railway begin their journey at Porthmadog and we will do the same.
In the woods a little way up the line from Tan-y-Bwlch station on the 11th September 1995 the Double Fairlie 'Merddin Emrys' is heard departing heading for Blaenau Ffestiniog.

 The Welsh Highland Railway Society
The FR and WHR are likely to continue to be run as separate services, meeting at Porthmadog Harbour station with occasional through trains on charter.
Its members hankered after a total restoration of the WHR but were restrained by the necessity incumbent on all struggling railway enterprises to keep the cooperation of the local Councils, the most influential of which for diverse political reasons were dead set against such a restoration.
The (present) Welsh Highland Railway Society was formed in 1993 as a supporters' body for the FR/TCL project.

This line,2ft gauge,first opened in 1836 as a gravity system to carry slate from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog, to the harbour at Porthmadog, a distance of some 13½ miles.

Steam locomotives came into operation in 1863 and the pioneering Robert Fairlie's Patent double bogie locomotive was introduced in 1870, greatly increasing the capacity of the line.

One possibility that has been aired is that, as an interim measure, trains might run into the WHR (Porthmadog) terminus awaiting the completion of the Cross-Town link and alterations to Harbour Station, though this is considered unlikely by FR management.
The rebuilding of the Welsh Highland is divided into seven phases costed at £18 million.
The work-base may move from Dinas to the south end of the line once the line to Beddgelert is complete.
