The Reverend Captain William Andrew White, D.D., was born in 1874 to former slaves in King and Queen County, Virginia, U.S.A. Reverend White came to Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1900 after a Canadian school teacher in Baltimore impressed him with descriptions of this Canadian province.
White graduated from Acadia in 1903 with an arts degree in Theology, was ordained a minister, and spent the next two years as a travelling missionary for the African Baptist Churches of Nova Scotia.
White met and married Izie Dora White (coincidentally she had the same last name) of Mill Village Nova Scotia, and together they raised a family of twelve children.

Daughter of Reverend William Andrew White, a descendant of American slaves from Virginia, and Izie Dora White of Mill Village, NS, Portia White demonstrated musical talent at an early age, singing solos at the local Baptist church and at the Halifax Music Festival.
Portia White died of cancer in Toronto on February 13, 1968, at the age of 57.

Portia's oldest sister Helena was the organist for the concerts; Portia herself was the choir director.

White was supporting herself as a school teacher when her extraordinary voice, much admired at various amateur functions, won her a scholarship for study with Ernesto Vinci at the Halifax Conservatory of Music.
Dinah Christie was a pupil of White in the mid-1960s, as were Judy Lander and Anne Marie Moss.
A memorial scholarship in her honour is presented by the Nova Scotia Talent Trust (established in 1944 to assist White's career).

Wilson-Hammond chose the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, started in 1944 to support Portia White, to use the $7,000 for the next seven years for the $1,000 Charlotte Wilson-Hammond Visual Arts Nova Scotia Award to go to a visual arts student.
Previous winners of the Portia White Prize, established in 1997, included writer and poet George Elliott Clark, conductor Georg Tintner, visual artist Garry Neill Kennedy, writer Alistair MacLeod and filmmaker Sylvia Hamilton.
Nominations for the 2004 Portia White Prize will be accepted until Oct. 1 by the culture division of the department of tourism, culture and heritage.
