Portici - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Portici is a city in Campania, Italy, in the Province of Naples, situated 8 km (5 miles) southeast of Naples, on the shores of the bay and at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
The palace, erected in 1738, is traversed by the high road.
Just beyond Portici, on the south east, is Resina, on the site of the ancient Herculaneum, with several fine modern villas.

PORTICI   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In the antiquity it was possible to arrive here only in carriage, but from the 1837 the place could be reached by train of the railway Naples-Portici, that was the first in Italy.
At present Portici looks altered because of chaotic building development, but looking now from the height, we can get an idea of how was this place at the time of the Bourbon, when Charles III chose it as summer residence.
But Portici is not only the Royal Palace, almost all the 121 villas aligned along the coast are the authentic masterpieces as the Favorita and the Vanvitelli’s Villa Campolieto, that at present, restored, holds the biggest collection of contemporaneous art in Italy.

Taizé - Meeting in Portici   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Portici is a small town on the Gulf of Naples, not far from the ancient city of Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Today it is a locality of some 60,000 inhabitants crowded into 4 km2, which makes the density of the population almost the highest in the world.
The population, active in commerce and the liberal professions, wishes to be self-sufficient, but in fact the town is for the most part a dormitory-suburb of Naples, situated immediately to the north.
Portici has all the problems typical of southern Italy: poverty and unemployment which are on the increase particularly at this time of economic crisis, organized crime, under-development.

In 1740, King Charles III embarked on the construction of the Royal Palace of Portici as a summer residence for the court.
Located in eastern Naples, it was originally used as a hunting lodge and boasted a large park that blended rare and exotic plants into the natural landscape.
It is hoped that listing will widen the study and interpretation of the site to include its historic gardens and context and help to develop a plan for the long-term maintenance and reuse of the palace.

The Dumb Girl of Portici (1916)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The Dumb Girl of Portici is based on an Auber and Scribe opera, but obviously as a silent film the music isn't there to help it out.
The sets and scenery, however, are truly impressive, though the preservation print that survives on this title is a bit dark and grainy.
What is most amazing about The Dumb Girl of Portici is that director/writer Lois Weber was able to command such expensive resources to get this made, as it is both conceived and executed on an epic scale.
