SOMERSETSHIRE - LoveToKnow Article on SOMERSETSHIRE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Somerset was very rich in boroughs at the time of Domesday, which points to a considerable development of trade before the Conquest; Bath, Taunton, Ilchester, Frome, Milborne Port, Bruton, Langport and Axbridge were all boroughs in 1087, and there was the nucleus of a borough at Veovil.
Somerset was too distant and isolated to take much share in the early baronial rebellions or the Wars of the Roses, and was really without political history until the end of the middle ages.
Somerset took a considerable part in the Civil War, and with the exception of Taunton, was royalist, all the strongholds being garrisoned and held for the king.

Hopefully the Force Historian at Avon & Somerset Police will be able to tell me more about them.
It seems that after leaving the police they owned and ran a pub in Portishead called The Albion and eventually owned 3 cottages (Cypress Cottage, 1 Albert Villas and 2 Albert Villas, all in High St. Portishead) which were left to the children and grand-daughter Frances Amy Mitchell.
Although it looks incorrect (misread or a typo by the transcriber no doubt), the 1881 census entry below is confirmed by Amelia and Albert being mentioned in James's will and all the ages being correct, however neither William nor Charles James are mentioned there which suggests that they had both died before 1902.
