	Portland stone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Portland stone is limestone from the Jurassic period quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset.
		The Roach bed is rougher with many fossils and its stone is notably used in the Cobb, at nearby Lyme Regis, Dorset.
		The Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust was formed in 1983.

		Lyme Regis is well known for "The Cobb", a harbour wall full of character and history, built from Portland Admiralty Roach stone.
		The Cobb is featured in novels by Jane Austen (who stayed for a time in Lyme Regis) and in the The French Lieutenant's Woman by local writer John Fowles, which was adapted as a film set in Lyme Regis.

		The noun "roach" is possibly derived from the old French "roke" or "roche" in English usage since the middle of the 13th Century, meaning a mass or rock, a cliff or boulder.
		The first Portland stone quarries were situated on the north eastern coast of the Island, close to Rufus Castle, where huge landslips made the stone more easily accessible and the proximity of the sea, allowed the quarried stone blocks to be moved over relatively large distances by barge.
		Portland stone was used to build the Palace of Westminster in 1347, the Tower of London in 1349 and the first stone London Bridge in 1350.
